ROLE SUMMARY

The Leukocyte-Tissue Interface (LTI) group is looking for a highly-motivated Principal Scientist to join a multi-disciplinary discovery group tasked with developing a cutting-edge, collaborative research program on the interactions of parenchymal tissues with resident and infiltrating leukocytes as applied to diseases in areas of Inflammation, Internal Medicine, Anti-Infectives, and Oncology that will have cross-research unit impact and delivery.

Specifically, the Principal Scientist will support a new cross-disciplinary team of scientists with expertise in Anti-Infectives that leverages cross-research unit science and expertise to support the development of novel therapeutics at the intersection between immunology and these respective disciplines. He/She will effectively and rapidly advance the biologic foundation in breaking areas of science using cutting edge technologies including optical microscopy and high content screening, systems immunology and single cell RNA techniques (scRNAseq, spatial transcriptomics, perturb-seq). The Principal Scientist will be responsible for establishing and maintaining collaborations between the Inflammation and Immunology and Anti-Infectives Research Units, as well as preparing and presenting new targets packages for potential portfolio entry.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Liaise with partners in the collaborating research unit to identify key areas of biology for new targets discovery.
  • Utilize diseased tissues, sourced from experimental animal models and biopsies obtained from patients to better understand tissue-immune system cross-talk,
  • Prepare proposals identifying novel drug targets to selectively modulate pathologic tissue states.
  • Integrate internal and external datasets to identify potential targets and support the development novel portfolio projects within the Inflammation and Immunology and Anti-Infectives Research Units.
  • Ensure scientific excellence in the design, execution, analysis, and interpretation of experiments in the context of applied research.
  • Guarantee that data generation, analysis, and retention is handled in a compliant manner ensuring the highest quality and integrity of findings.
  • Support the basic science effort at Pfizer by delivering quality assays and datasets to support the development new portfolio programs.
  • Contributes to the delivery of a required number of new assays, platforms, and portfolio programs per year of high quality.
  • Influences the global external environment through participation at national and international meetings and visible and active engagement with key scientific opinion leaders to ensure the group makes the appropriate investments.
  • Champions projects generated internally, via external collaborations, collaboration with Pfizer's Center for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI), or from unique partnering opportunities, thus ensuring a robust and competitive portfolio of programs and platforms for IIRU and the partnering RUs.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. or equivalent training.
  • 5-7 years of relevant research experience in discovery science.
  • Preferred minimum 3 years of experience in pharmaceutical R&D.
  • Strong working knowledge of medical issues, immunology and inflammation - specifically anti-viral innate immunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across functions and lines in a matrix environment.
  • Combines knowledge from multiple sources to generate novel and high impact ideas. Gets to the core of the problem, asks insightful and probing questions and gets to the next steps effectively.
  • Record of delivering quality assays and datasets that empower the generation of new programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge, techniques and skills to identify new, 'druggable' targets.
  • Established history of working well in a team environment and collaborating with other scientists to complement individual areas of expertise with partner capabilities.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills. Ability to disseminate complex scientific findings in a concise manner to a broad audience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in select core biology themes including the interplay between host immunity and viral pathogens.
  • Expertise in respiratory disorders and pathologies
  • Ability to work with and integrate large datasets in order to identify core pathways and targets of therapeutic interest to the department.
  • Background in the intersection of Inflammation and Viral Biology.
