The Manufacturing Science and Technology (MS&T) group at Spark leads technology transfer initiatives, supports manufacturing processes, and evaluates new technologies to enhance our manufacturing capabilities.

The general responsibility of the 2023 Summer Intern is to support the MS&T team in gene therapy production in a hybrid working environment. Spark’s MS&T intern will support activities related to tech transfer of a clinical program to Spark’s manufacturing facility. This role will involve application of engineering principles in the practical pharmaceutical environment.

The intern will assist in assessing the performance of the tech transferred process by preparing process monitoring plans, performing process data trending, and generating content for summary reports. They will also participate in post-run reviews and lessons learned sessions focused on identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

The intern will learn about the production of Gene Therapy products (specifically adeno-associated virus), the tech transfer process for drug substances, and cGMP manufacturing requirements. They will also collaborate with members of many different functional areas within Spark that are involved in process tech transfers.

Education and Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • At least 2 years left of a combination of undergraduate and/or graduate coursework with summer availability (e.g., rising junior, or rising senior pursuing graduate school)
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university
  • Majoring in a chemical engineering-related degree
  • Minimum availability of 10 weeks (about 2 and a half months)
  • can be done as a hybrid role
  • Participation in student organizations and/or other leadership experience
