Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust

The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust is one of the nation’s leading regional foundations with assets of over $340 million and an annual grant distribution of approximately $16 million in the broad program areas of biomedical and scientific research, education and youth recreation.  Examples of major science-oriented endeavors funded by the Carver Charitable Trust include establishment of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute on the University of Iowa campus, launching of the Structural Biology Research Initiative within the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology at Iowa State University and formation of the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Position: The Trust is currently seeking candidates for the recently created role of PROGRAM OFFICER in science and biomedicine.  Located in the Trust’s newly remodeled and expanded headquarters along the Mississippi River in downtown Muscatine, Iowa, this position will serve in a professional capacity, assuming multiple duties to facilitate the grant-making process and reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer.

Responsibilities: The incumbent will support program research and development, engage directly with investigators to identify exciting areas of scientific inquiry that may be considered for Trust support, and conduct follow-up monitoring and assessment of funded initiatives.  Establishing relationships with grantees and prospective applicants will form a significant part of this role, along with managing grant-related correspondence and evaluative data for reporting to the Board of Trustees.

Qualifications: A doctoral degree in the natural sciences is required. Highly developed writing skills, a facility to communicate with clarity, a discerning, critical and analytical mind, a willingness to expand one’s knowledge base, and a capacity to function within a collaborative environment are essential. Familiarity with the academic scientific research environment and the customary grant-seeking process would be beneficial. Additional prerequisites include a strong attention to detail, as well as the ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position will generally fall within the range of $100-$150K, based on the candidate's credentials and relevant work experience.  A generous comprehensive benefits package is also provided, along with free on-site parking.

About the Community: Located along the Mississippi River in southeast Iowa, Muscatine is rich in innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, as well as natural beauty.  It serves as the corporate headquarters for several major employers, including HNI, a publicly traded firm on the NYSE that is one of the largest office furniture manufacturers in the world, and Kent Corporation, a privately held, international company, engaged in the manufacture of livestock feeds, pet products and various additives for the food and beverage industries.  In addition, Muscatine is home to numerous recreational amenities for individuals and families, including riverfront biking and pedestrian trails, an exceptional soccer complex, a recently remodeled Family Y facility, and a large city park with a popular aquatic center.  Also, Muscatine is just a short distance from Iowa City and the University of Iowa, where many opportunities exist for taking advantage of cultural activities and sporting events.

Application Procedure:  Please send your curriculum vitae and a letter of introduction describing your qualifications and suitability for the position to: Troy K. Ross, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer, Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust, 202 Iowa Avenue, Muscatine IA 52761 at info@carvertrust.org.
