For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Laser Engineer

Unlimited | Starting date: 01.07.2023 | ID: FSMA026/2023 | Deadline: 25.04.2023 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

Many future compact accelerator and X-ray source technologies are laser based. In this context, as part of the high-power laser project within the Ultrafast Optics and X-rays group at the Centre for Free-Electron Laser Science at DESY we develop high average power lasers providing high energy pulses (Joule) at kHz repetition rates, i.e. kW average power. Here, we pursue cryogenic lasers that have demonstrated such performance at the picosecond level and we are scaling it to femtosecond performance. To strengthen our international team coming from all over the world and speaking 15 languages, we are seeking a highly-motivated laser engineer/scientist to solve very challenging technology problems.

About your role:

  • A very versatile and challenging job with individual responsibility and the potential to shape the future of laser technology
  • Designing and developing high power laser systems for THz generation and advanced X-ray sources
  • Identifying and evaluating new technologies as well as integrating them into existing and future systems
  • Performing characterization measurements
  • Collaborating in the application areas of the laser systems
  • Possibility for wide range of further education and personal growth

About you:

  • University degree in physics, engineering, photonics or similar fields of study
  • Several years of working experience preferred
  • Hands-on laboratory experience in a laser or optics lab
  • Expertise in troubleshooting laser performance problems
  • Knowledge of programming languages for automation of experiments in science and engineering (such as LabVIEW, MatLab, Python etc.)
  • Fluency in English

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a job ticket at both locations.
