We are seeking a Director to lead the Engineering and Process Safety Teams within Chemical Research and Development (CRD) at the Groton, CT site. The successful candidate will lead a team of chemical engineers, chemists and technicians who are responsible for the application of chemical engineering principles, the use of data rich experiments, and the application of modelling techniques to ensure the selection of safe and scalable processing conditions to deliver high quality materials from our manufacturing facilities. The candidate will collaborate with our Engineering leader at the Sandwich, UK site to balance workload, share expertise and ensure alignment and the use of best practices for the application of process safety, process modelling, and experimental approaches to solve scale-up challenges. They will ensure timely support of projects of the Groton API portfolio and partner closely with the Process Chemistry leadership in CRD.

CRD, as part of Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecule within Worldwide Research and Medical is responsible for the development of process technology for the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API). CRD managers engage in all facets of development from small scale synthesis in support of medicinal chemistry programs, to the development of the commercial synthetic route. CRD managers partner with manufacturing specialists for API synthesis in kilo-lab and pilot plant facilities, as well as provide oversight for technology transfer to Pfizer manufacturing sites and third-party facilities.

The successful candidate will lead the Engineering and Process Safety Group and will grow and develop the team through recruitment, goal setting, performance management and individual development planning. They will collaborate with managers and scientists from across Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecule and Pfizer Global Supply to evolve our experimental and computational modelling tools used by Process Safety and Engineering colleagues as part of API project teams. The successful candidate will progress the department's vision for the use and implementation of modelling tools within CRD.

The team leader will also be responsible for implementing continuous API manufacturing technologies on projects and partnering with the FAST Director to develop tech transfer processes utilizing continuous technologies. They will be a strong people manager with a proven ability to drive performance and personal development of direct line reports and support our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. This role will also serve as a member of the Groton CRD Management Team and partner with other CRD managers to ensure the smooth operation of the department.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manages and leads a team of chemical engineers, chemists, and technicians within the Engineering & Process safety groups at the Groton site. Will grow the team through recruitment while ensuring budgetary targets are met for expense and capital.
  • Has direct accountability for setting direction, deploying resources, and leading pay, performance, goal setting, and development discussions for the Groton Engineering Group. Lead first-line leaders in the Engineering group as they develop their direct reports. Support the Groton Process Safety manager in developing the skills of the process safety group members.
  • Provides technical and functional expertise to the Groton Process Safety and Engineering teams, ensuring sound chemical engineering principles are applied in the development of processes for technology transfer.
  • Considered a subject matter expert in chemical engineering and how chemical engineering principles can de-risk scaleup
  • Ensure successful application of Process Safety workflows to support laboratory through manufacturing scale-up.
  • Utilizes awareness of API portfolio priorities to assign resources & set priorities to ensure project deliverables. Generates realistic and balanced forecasts for near-, mid- and long-term engineering resource needs
  • Ensures the scientific & personal development of all colleagues within reporting line which includes providing opportunities to identify new technologies for discipline
  • Conduct all Performance Management activities for direct reports. Provide critical evaluation of potential candidates for proper fit for open positions.
  • Lead the implementation of modelling principles and techniques within the Groton Engineering group to ensure delivery of Digital Design goals within CRD.
  • Ensures the development and deployment of models to guide experimental design and predict process performance at scale.
  • Supports the CRD Technology Strategy and external alliances that will enable CRD towards its 2030 vision, ensuring a strong external network.
  • Ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance with all quality, safety, and housekeeping policies. Strong advocate for safety and visibly supports all department and site safety policies
  • Provide leadership to an organization of ~20 colleagues and accelerate the development of leaders in the organization supporting our DEI objectives.

  • Partners closely with Sandwich Engineering lead and UK/US Flexible API Supply Technology leads to develop and implement FAST technologies on project teams.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education/Experience

PhD Chemist or Chemical Engineer with a minimum of 10 years relevant pharmaceutical research & development experience in small molecule API or BSc/MSc Chemist or Chemical Engineer with a minimum of 15 years relevant pharmaceutical process research & development experience in small molecule API.

Required Technical Skills

Recognized as a strong scientific leader withinthe chemical engineering discipline.An expert in the pharmaceutical development process. Contemporary awareness of scientific developments and opportunities in chemistry and chemical engineering. A highly credible technical functional expert with experience in supervising others. Early adopter of new technologies/methods of work to enhance business productivity. API process commercialization, Technology Transfer and Regulatory Dossier authorship or review experience.

Leadership Skills

Experience leading and motivating teams through times of change with excellent communication skills. Ability to influence the technical direction and future direction and workflows of the group. Demonstrated experience mentor leading first line managers in a larger organization.

Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to perform complex tasks with appropriate mental agility, including mathematical calculations and complex data analysis.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

Will be required to occasionally travel domestically and internationally (0-10%) to Pfizer sites or to meet with external collaborators.
