Position Summary

Our major research focus in the DiStefano Lab aims to identify the genes and molecular pathways that make individuals susceptible to the development of severe clinical manifestations of complex diseases, including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and complications of diabetes. The overall goal of our research is to provide the basis for improved diagnostic capabilities and facilitate the development of more effective treatment and prevention strategies.

We are seeking a Research Associate III to investigate RNA and protein signatures in blood-based extracellular vesicles (EV) indicative of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) in bariatric surgery patients. Profiles of circulating EV cargo from patients diagnosed with T2D will be compared with those from individuals without T2D and EV profiles in the T2D group will be followed over the course of one year to determine how EV composition is affected by weight loss and remission of diabetes. In addition, the candidate will perform a variety of cellular and molecular biology experiments to identify functional consequences of EV-derived components.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and execute experiments, analyze and interpret experimental results, develop conclusions, and devise solutions to problems utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices and under the direction of the scientist in charge.
  • Compile experimental results into graphs and tables.
  • Research and plan follow-up experiments.
  • Communicate results and progress in weekly laboratory meeting and one-on-one meetings with Dr. DiStefano.
  • Mentor interns, new and junior employees; assist in lab safety and equipment training and protocols.
  • Keep detailed logs of equipment protocols and reagents in the lab and coordinate, manage and perform the selection and purchasing of equipment and research supplies with guidance from faculty members.
  • Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, progress reports, and grant applications.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • Bachelor's degree in a science-related field (Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics)
  • At least ten years of experience in a biological sciences research laboratory
  • Experience with basic laboratory equipment (i.e. thermal cyclers, spectrophotometers, microscopes, centrifuges)
  • Mammalian cell culture expertise
  • Molecular biology skills (PCR, cloning, luciferase assay, transfection, knockdown)
  • DNA and RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, gel electrophoresis, quantitation
  • Protein extraction, quantitation, ELISA, and western blots
  • Statistical and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of extracellular vesicles isolation and characterization
