Summary

The Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) was founded in 1996 during the Human Genome Project and continues to be a world leader in genomics. The fundamental interests of the HGSC are in advancing biology and genetics by improved genome technologies. As a large-scale sequencing center funded by the National Institutes of Health, the HGSC provides a unique opportunity to work on the cutting-edge of genomic science in a state-of-the-art institution. Today, the HGSC employs ~ 150 staff, and it occupies more than 36,000 square feet on the 14th, 15th, and 16th floors of the Margaret M. and Albert B. Alkek Building. The HGSC is located on the southwest edge of downtown Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S., in the Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical complex. The major activity of the HGSC is high-throughput DNA sequence generation and the accompanying analyses. The HGSC is also involved in developing the next generation of DNA sequencing and bioinformatics technologies that will allow greater scientific advances in the future.

The HGSC is seeking a Manager, Research Operations to assume the primary management responsibility of metagenomic and microbial/pathogen related sequencing projects. This role will serve as the operational Program Manager for the BCM NIAID Genomic Centers for Infectious Disease (GCID) sequencing and technology core. The Manager will track program deliverables which include stakeholders across multiple departments across BCM. They will ensure the HGSC production schedule stays on track and will contribute to technology development efforts related to the program. The manager will oversee other project manager(s) involved in this activity at the HGSC.

This is an onsite role with potential for hybrid work schedule.

Job Duties

  • Contribute to the implementation of sequencing and analysis activity to ensure research projects are completed on schedule and according to project specifications.
  • Lead/supervises the work of GCID project staff including project coordinators, QA analysts and submissions staff and will directly manage one or more professional level employees.
  • Prepare utilization reports and plan for required resources across functional areas based on scope and schedule of sequencing initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement to execution of processes and tools.
  • Create project schedules, and maintain them through the project lifecycle.
  • Discuss all project requirements with collaborators prior to initiation to ensure success.
  • Communicate and document project status to funding agencies and project stakeholders on a regular basis.
  • Facilitate communication with scientific collaborators and maintain relationships in a proactive fashion.
  • Present project status at national meetings as requested.
  • Contribute to high level troubleshooting with laboratory staff as needed to develop mitigation plans.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Four years of relevant experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in a scientific discipline
  • Requires excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Requires the exercise of tact and diplomacy in dealing with faculty, staff and students.
  • Must be proficient in the use of a personal computer and Microsoft software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics.
  • EndNote or reference manager skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Prior experience with data management in an academic setting.
  • Experience with Next-Gen sequencing and molecular biology concepts.
