The Commercial Development Lead will be responsible for developing asset strategy (as member of the Asset or Candidate development Teams), developing and integrating customer insights and market knowledge, and shaping the profile for commercial success of Sparks gene therapy pipeline assets across multiple therapeutic areas.The individual will collaborate with Disease Area Leadership Teams in developing cross-functional target organ and disease area strategy. The individual will lead high-level strategic initiatives and perform commercial assessments of external Business Development opportunities.The Commercial Development lead may be responsible for managing process improvement initiatives.The Commercial Development Lead will be the leader of the Brand Strategy Team and a core member of Asset or Candidate Development Teams (AT, CDT). This requires partnering successfully with the Program Team leaders as well as colleagues from Commercial Development, Market Access, Pricing & Reimbursement, Patient Advocacy, HEOR, Medical, Clinical Development, R&D Operations, and Business Development functions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic commercial input into early-stage pipeline programs via day to day management of Brand Strategy teams which are responsible for determining the annual plan and implementing the strategies and tactics needed to assess and develop the marketplace. The various activities / responsibilities in scope are as follows:
    • Provide commercial expertise, leadership, and input with membership on each asset team.
    • Lead the development and validation of product concepts, target product profiles, prepare market assessments and drive patient journey work
    • Lead research with physicians (with Clinical Development and/or Medical Affairs), payers and patients (with Patient Advocacy Group) to address other questions impacting the program and key decisions
    • Develop, assess and update commercial forecasts and sensitivity analyses for internal and potential new/external programs
    • Provide competitive intelligence informing clinical program design
    • Develop initial product positioning and differentiation that can lead to success in the marketplace
    • With P&R team, drive early payer and HTA interactions and develop the payer value proposition
    • Develop business case for life-cycle management opportunities
    • Develop strategic imperatives and functional objectives with the team
    • Lead the brand planning process that integrates marketing, market access and medical.
    • Partner with relevant Roche and Genentech in-market, TA, and global teams to source input, incorporate guidance into global brand strategy and prepare the markets for launch
    • Lead IDCP (integrated development and commercial plan) process and transition activities in preparation for phase 3 stage gate decision
    • Represent Spark in developing and maintaining strong relationships with key opinion leaders, customers including providers, patients, industry associations, and other constituencies
    • Assess, make recommendations, and lead the development of other capabilities required as the organization evolves (e.g., digital, marketing excellence, innovative solutions, salesforce excellence).
    • Ensure multi-year focus for each brand and build strategic roadmap including life-cycle management, and portfolio/franchise strategy
    • Understand and anticipate relevant market trends (macro, economic, political, payer) impacting the industry, gene therapy, and company strategy. Actively identify risks and opportunities, develop appropriate action plans and communicate effectively across the organization.
    • Lead disease area, target organ, cross-functional strategic initiatives, other strategic initiatives, and present recommendations to leadership Team.
    • Lead, develop and ensure the execution of congress activities for early pipeline assets and participate in interchange meetings with Global/Regional Commercial, Medical and R&D colleagues from the markets.
    • Partner with Corporate Communications, Medical, Patient Advocacy and R&D to develop and implement disease area and pipeline asset communication strategy and plan.
    • Liaise with business development to provide due diligence support in creating a TPP, commercial market and development assessments and championing external opportunities relative to internal portfolio.
    • Liaise with external experts to assess new business opportunities.

Education and Experience Requirements

    • BS/BA required; Advanced degree (PhD, Pharm D, MBA) highly preferred
    • Minimum 12+ years life science industry experience required; with at least 5+ years of experience in global commercial, in-line marketing and sales or strategic experience with Spark Therapeutics commercial and / or investigational gene therapy assets
    • Significant commercial experience in Rare Disease required. HEM, Ocular, HAE and/or LSD experiences an advantage
    • Leading customer insight and cross-functional strategic projects
    • Working with a cross functional team to develop product marketing claims and payer value propositions
    • Applying strategic marketing concepts to develop, improve, or position products
    • Launch experience strongly preferred
    • Demonstrated strong scientific acumen, and experience with genetics and/or genetic diseases strongly preferred
    • Market access and payer experience an advantage

    • Ability to create forecasts and P&L
    • Strong ability to influence others
