Position: Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies

Appointment Rank: Tenure track

Salary Range: $68,000 - $77,000

Hiring Range: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification,

commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Available: Start date is open; beginning no later than August 2023.

Definition of Classification:

The Department of Environmental Studies seeks applicants broadly trained in the earth and marine sciences with some methodological application of GIS in their research or teaching. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to (1) enrich interdisciplinary offerings on campus through courses; and (2) thrive in an undergraduate program within a small private liberal arts university, where excellence in teaching and advising is highly valued. The successful applicant will have the ability to teach some combination of courses such as Physical Geology, Historical Geology, Marine Environmental Science, Oceanography, Coastal Geomorphology, and intermediate and advanced courses in which students are coached to complete an applied project in environmental analysis using GIS. Candidates with a background in earth science, marine science, and atmospheric science are particularly encouraged to apply. The department will give preference to applicants who have experience working with students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Applicants are asked to identify their strengths and experiences in assisting diverse student populations to accomplish curricular goals.

Teaching duties include 6 course equivalents per year. One of those courses may be a travel course or field-intensive course during our month-long May term.

The ideal candidate will be broadly trained in the earth sciences with the ability to (1) teach physical science courses with applications in environmental GIS, (2) develop a research agenda that includes mentoring of undergraduate students, and (3) oversee senior capstone projects that include the use of ArcGIS software.

The University:

The University of Redlands is a private, comprehensive liberal arts and professional institution with approximately 2,500 undergraduate students in the residential College of Arts and Sciences and 500 graduate students in the School of Business and Society. It is located sixty miles east of downtown Los Angeles, in a town of 70,000. The campus is surrounded by orange groves and sits at the base of the San Bernardino mountains, one hour from ski resorts, one hour from the coast and 45 minutes from Palm Springs. Light rail into downtown Los Angeles and coastal areas is available.

Experience/Training/Education:

Required

Candidates should possess:
  • D. in relevant environmental field and a broad base of knowledge and experience using GIS technologies.
  • Record of research, experience in teaching at the undergraduate level, and student mentorship experience.

Preferred
  • A field-based or otherwise hands-on approach to teaching earth science, including but not limited to, field trips and laboratories that explore the local geology, coastal morphology, and the near-shore environment.
  • Candidates with experience (or interest) in developing domestic or international field-based courses during our 4 week May Term. Note these courses may be directly related to the candidate's research interests and agenda.
  • The University of Redlands seeks candidates who have experience working with students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
