The Sloan Kettering Institute invites internal and external applications to its newest funding opportunity — a postdoctoral fellowship focusing on quantitative biology. This program aims to provide support to quantitative biologists focusing on high-risk, high-impact cancer research.

Program Description: Demand for gifted quantitative biologists is high and spans many industries. Finding quantitative biologists who specializes in cancer is even more difficult. The ability to efficiently navigate and analyze massive quantities of information can yield deep insights into how cancer grows and spreads – and how to fight it. Computational biologists combine an understanding of intricate biological processes with expertise in quantitative approaches, data science and algorithms. In the context of cancer research, they use advanced statistical, mathematical, and computing methods to simulate the behavior of living organisms from the molecular level up through the whole being, creating models that can make useful predictions about the development and behavior of cancer. This award is designed to build a new generation of skilled quantitative biologists who specialize in cancer by recruiting and training top talent at MSK.

This grant will provide a maximum of $102,000 per year direct costs (with the potential for a second year) to work jointly with two tenure-track faculty labs at MSK (one “dry lab” and one “wet lab”) to pursue as their main research focus, a highly innovative project that focuses on quantitative biology and cancer research. Funds are to be used for salary support/fringe benefits ($73,000 + fringe) and for conferences and associated research expenses ($6,000). All applicants are required to identify two mentors at MSK: (a) computational scientist (“dry lab”) and (b) cancer biologist (“wet lab”). Annual progress reports will be requested from each awardee.

Application Eligibility Requirements

• Trainee must be a postdoc focusing on quantitative biology and cancer research.
• Trainee must be a postdoc for less than 2 years.
• Trainee must hold an advanced degree: MD, PhD, MD/PhD, DO or equivalent, with a specialization in data science or computational science.
• Mentors must have a proven track record of discovery in their own lab related to this area of research.
• No citizenship or residency restrictions apply to this opportunity.
