MD Anderson's Department of Symptom Research is at the forefront of discovering new ways of identifying the symptoms and neurotoxicities associated with cancer and its treatment, the mechanisms underlying such symptoms and toxicities, and interventions that might reduce symptom severity or prevent symptom occurrence altogether. Our translational research program integrates preclinical , translational , and clinical research projects that range from bedside to bench and bench to bedside.

Key Functions
  • Initiates, plans, organizes, coordinates, directs and participates in research chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicities in close collaboration with Professor Heijnen.
  • Performs animal experiments involving chemotherapy treatment and behavioral experiments with the animals to measure pain and cognition.
  • Reports on results of the research in lab meetings and in written and verbal form to supervisor.
  • Writes manuscripts describing results of her research projects in collaboration with professor.
  • Ensures appropriate laboratory compliance with institutional guidelines.
  • Ensures laboratory adherence to safety standards.
  • Assigns and reviews work of subordinates, determines specific goals or objectives to be attained, evaluates resulting research data and revises techniques or approaches to work problems. Supervises the design, development or adapting of equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.
  • Compiles, writes and submits reports to superior.
  • Other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION: Masters degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

EXPERIENCE: Four years of experience in experimental or scientific work. With PhD, no experience required. With Medical degree, two years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
