The Department of Microbiology at Oregon State University invites applications for a Department Head, with an accompanying appointment as tenured Professor. The incumbent will hold two appointments, a 0.75 FTE professional faculty position and a 0.25 FTE tenured Professor position, reflecting job duties in both the administrative and academic arenas during the academic year.

In addition, the leadership responsibilities of the Department Head position continue during the summer months and these are accounted for through a separate summer appointment. The Head reports to the Dean of the College of Science. The Head is an integral part of the College Leadership Teams (CLT) in both the College of Science and the College of Agricultural Sciences working closely with the Deans to advance the mission of the Colleges, develop strategy and participate in decisions impacting the finances and budget of the department.

The Department of Microbiology is jointly administered by the College of Science (COS) and the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS). The primary mission of the Department is to provide undergraduate and graduate education, and conduct basic and applied research. The Department offers PhD and MS degrees in Microbiology and BS degrees in Microbiology and BioHealth Sciences (also available online at OSU's Ecampus), and is committed to providing equitable access to quality learning and career development at all levels. It is an integral part of the School of Life Sciences which also includes the Departments of Biochemistry & Biophysics and Integrative Biology. The Department of Microbiology has research programs in wide ranging aspects of environmental and health related microbiology. Areas of particular interest include molecular and cellular virology, viral pathogenesis, host-pathogen interactions using a variety of animal models, antivirals and vaccines, epidemiology, viral ecology, diversity and evolution, zoonotic and vector-borne viruses, as well as the human virome and interaction with other microbiome constituents. Research endeavors that link to local strengths in microbial pathogenesis, microbiome research, and data science are encouraged.

The Department has 14 tenure-track faculty members, 4 instructors and 4 advisors, 1 professional faculty, 4 classified staff, and approximately 120 majors in Microbiology, 800 majors in BioHealth Sciences, and about 40 graduate students. Several tenure-track faculty members share appointments with other departments, including in the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Pharmacy and the College of Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences.

The Department Head is responsible for the management and leadership of the Department's teaching, research, and service and outreach functions. The Head is expected to provide effective academic leadership, strategic vision and to remain active in teaching and research. The Department Head will integrate, advocate and advance equity & inclusive excellence within all aspects of their work. They will continuously refine the department's mission, vision and values to align with the mission and vision of COS, CAS and Oregon State University.

The Head reports to the Dean of the College of Science and is an integral part of both of the College Leadership Teams working closely with the Deans of COS and CAS to advance the mission of both colleges, develop strategy and participate in decisions impacting the finances and budget of the Department of Microbiology.

The Head will collaborate with the microbiology faculty and staff in leading the development and implementation of the strategic and diversity plans of the department and in connecting strategy to resources and budget to maintain and improve the fiscal health of the department. The Head will provide leadership for faculty in the development of policies and programs to improve student recruitment & success and address opportunity gaps for Pell-eligible, First Generation students, Students of Color and students from other underrepresented communities in STEM. Specific duties are to oversee budgetary and hiring and salary decisions, communicate vision and mission of the department to the college and university, set policy for the department, authorize proposal submissions for department mission, oversee completion of regular reporting required by the college and university, enhance diversity, foster collaborations across departments and colleges; engage community stakeholders as appropriate (e.g. engaging with alumni), and help with fundraising for the department, college and university.
