Department summary

The Department of Physiology is an internationally renowned research- and teaching-intensive department ranked 21st amongst Physiology Departments worldwide (QS World University Research Rankings 2022). The Department is a leader in cellular and systems neurophysiology, lipid physiology, membrane biophysics and transport physiology, fetal/neonatal and cardiovascular physiology. The research programs of our 12 primary faculty (7 women and 5 men) are supported by over 40 external grants totalling >$15M, including 4 Canada Research Chairs. The graduate program supports 48 students (18 MSc and 30 PhD), while the 199 students in our undergraduate honors program (years 1-4) enjoy the additional support of three full-time teaching faculty.

The Department is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD), which comprises 5 basic science (including Physiology) and 16 clinical departments, 7 Research Institutes and 6 Core facilities that provide state-of-the-art research infrastructure and expertise (https://www.ualberta.ca/medicine/research/corefacilities/index.html).

Position Summary

The Department of Physiology (https://www.ualberta.ca/physiology/index.html), in partnership with the Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI; https://www.wchri.org/) and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute (NMHI; https://www.ualberta.ca/neuroscience-and-mental-health-institute/index.html) at the University of Alberta invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in developmental neuroscience.

Researchers whose work in developmental neuroscience will complement and enhance existing research strengths in the Department and partner institutes are especially encouraged to apply. This could include, but is not limited to, research that combines innovative model systems (cell/organ culture; organoids; animal models in vivo and in vitro) with cutting-edge approaches (e.g., electrophysiology, neurophotonics, opto- and chemogenetics) to advance mechanistic understanding (at the genetic, molecular, cellular, or organismal levels) of nervous system development in health and/or disease.

The position will have 60% time committed for research, 30% for teaching and 10% for administration. It is part of a cohort hire underway in the basic science departments of the FoMD to recruit a total of five tenure-track assistant professors.

Responsibilities

Establish an independent research program in developmental neuroscience

Contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Contribute to the research supervision and training of undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral trainees

Contribute to the administration of the Department of Physiology, the FoMD and the University of Alberta

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in physiology, neuroscience or a related discipline

Post-doctoral experience with a strong publication record with evidence, or promise, of developing an innovative, independent research program in developmental neuroscience
