Research Laboratory Manager - Cancer Biology (Gottlieb Laboratory)

MD Anderson's Cancer Biology department has a long history of being a leader in the field of basic and translational cancer biology research. The department emphasizes the training of students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows in the fundamentals of tumor biology to improve the outcomes of patients with malignancies. The department has built a program with close ties to many clinical departments to facilitate information exchange between the laboratory and the clinic. As such, faculty in the department are investigators on NIH funded collaborative cancer biology research grants ["Specialized Programs of Research Excellence" (SPOREs)]. In addition, there are several physician-scientists who have joint appointments in Cancer Biology, facilitating the exchange of clinically-relevant information between the laboratory and the clinic.

The primary purpose of the Research Laboratory Manager position is to plan and implement activities within a research laboratory. This position may also provide supervision and technical management to laboratory operations and conduct laboratory research projects.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Research Activities

• Organize and perform technical laboratory duties.
• Perform experiments as outlined by the principal investigator.
• Participate in the development and revision of technical protocols.
• Maintains the quality and timeliness of all research laboratory operations within budgetary guidelines.
• Manages workflow issues, administrative issues, operations and strategic planning issues.
• Maintain procedures and protocols that ensure the quality and integrity of procedures performed.
• Monitor workflow as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance, and stock solutions preparation.
• Maintain an excellent working knowledge of all various basic laboratory equipment and apparatus and be able to read equipment operation manuals and procedure manuals.
• Supervise technical personnel and trainees.
• Train and supervise new technicians and other laboratory personnel in proper laboratory techniques, the use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.
• Explain the scientific protocols currently being employed in the laboratory.
• Maintain clear and open lines of communication with co-workers.
• Serve as a resource person to provide training and current protocol information.
• Perform research projects and prepare written reports to the principal investigator.

Laboratory Regulatory Compliance and Safety Activities

• Ensure laboratory compliance with accrediting agency regulations.
• Supervise the overall appearance of the laboratory.
• Ensure that supplies and materials are stored properly.
• Oversee daily maintenance of all laboratory common equipment, supervise the upkeep and organization of common equipment areas, and oversees the instruction of proper use and care of all common equipment.
• Defines and develops reports according to laboratory needs.
• Uses laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve overall research laboratory operational issues and interacts with all levels of internal and external sources to resolve problems.
• Modifies and/or develops new techniques.
• Demonstrate and practice laboratory safety precautions.
• Provide verbal and/or written instructions to lab personnel on standards and specialized laboratory safety procedures.
• Develop new safety protocols as needed.
• Attend annual safety courses required by MDACC and others as necessary.
• Maintain and update laboratory safety notebooks (MSDS, Emergency Plan, Radiation Certificates, Safety Plan, Isotope Disposal, Wipe Tests, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Radiation Plan).

Inventory Control and Purchasing Activities

• Visually monitor inventories of consumable common supplies and replace depleted items in a timely fashion to ensure continuity in lab experimental procedures.
• Review requests for new common supplies and implement purchases when necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education

Required: Bachelor's degree.

Preferred: PhD degree in biomedical sciences or related field.

Experience

Required: Seven years experience in scientific, research or clinical laboratory, to include four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity. With preferred degree, five years of required experience to include four years in a supervisory/managerial capacity.

Preferred: Three years postdoctoral research.

Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.

Required: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
