The Department of Biophysics at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow (EPR Focus). Our lab in the Department of Biophysics at MCW performs technology research and development for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).

We are seeking a motivated individual to design and implement the next generation pulse and continuous-wave spectrometers for EPR to interface with state-of-the-art resonant probes. This project is part of a broader effort to significantly increase the sensitivity of EPR for protein single crystal and microfluidic applications and lead the field in biomedical research technology. The position will remain open until filled.

The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative laboratory focused on the structure-function duality of medically relevant enzymes, with access to state-of-the-art instrumentation and expertise in EPR spectroscopy. The applicant will be part of an interdisciplinary team. A successful individual will mentor graduate students in research projects. Strong collaborative skills are required.

Qualifications. Ideal candidates will have experience expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance Microwave components and system design Hardware/software interfacing Python, MATLAB, LabView, C/C++ Keysight ADS Excellent writing skills, as evidenced by first author publications

To apply. Applications should be submitted electronically at www.mcw.edu/careers (requisition #31648)

Our Commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. MCW is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and strongly encourages applications from individuals in groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. MCW is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate in hiring or employment on the basis of age, sex, race, color, religion, national origin, veteran status, disability, or sexual orientation.

Department of Biophysics. The Department of Biophysics at MCW has a rich history of innovation, unique expertise, and successful collaborations, with strong research programs in structural biology and biomedical imaging including EPR (electronic paramagnetic resonance), NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).

Research themes focus on protein structure and functional mechanisms, biological membrane processes, redox biology, and technology development in the areas of microwave applications, protein structure calculations, and computational image analysis for translation to clinical practice. State-of-the-art research resources geared toward these programs are available in the Department and the wider MCW campus. They include laboratories for EPR, NMR, MRI, X-ray crystallography, cryo electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, biomolecular analysis, and high-performance computing. Educational activities include teaching at the graduate and medical levels and mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral scientists. More information about the Department of Biophysics may be found at www.mcw.edu/Biophysics.

Medical College of Wisconsin. MCW is the state’s largest private research institution and third largest private medical school in the nation. Its focus on basic science and academic medicine brings together scientists, clinicians, and students to advance biomedical knowledge and solve human health challenges. MCW is the eighth largest private employer in the metro-Milwaukee area. Approximately 6,000 faculty and staff work on the beautiful Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus, which also houses Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Wisconsin, Curative Care, Versiti Blood Research Institute/Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division.

Milwaukee. Located 90 miles north of Chicago and along the western shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is one of America’s great cities, combining a dynamic urban community and rich cultural heritage with access to parks, rivers, and lakes. National Geographic named Milwaukee one of its "Best of the World" destinations for 2023 – one of only five places in the United States and 25 across the globe (Milwaukee Best of the World). The city is a popular venue for watersports, ethnic dining, music, and cultural festivals, and is recognized for its museums, orchestra, historic architecture, professional sports, gardens, and parks.
