The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (MMG). Founded in the 1950s, the Department comprises 42 primary and 8 secondary faculty members with a focus on basic research in molecular biology, microbiology, virology, biochemistry, and developmental biology, although candidates working within any area of microbiology and molecular genetics are encouraged to apply. In addition to driving independent research programs, investigators in the Department collaborate with scientists across all schools of the University of Pittsburgh, at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center (HCC), and around the world on a wide range of fundamental and applied problems. The University has a broad range of basic and clinical research in microbiology, infectious diseases, and vaccinology. Prominent entities among the Pitt microbiology community include the Center for Vaccine Research, Adult Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Infectious Diseases & Microbiology in the School of Public Health, the HCC Cancer Virology Program, and the Center for Medicine and the Microbiome.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is enjoying unparalleled growth in its research, clinical, and academic missions. The University of Pittsburgh ranks 3rd among educational institutions in NIH funding according to preliminary NIH RePORTER data. As chair of MMG, the successful candidate will have an exceptional opportunity to further grow the basic biomedical sciences in the School of Medicine. The incoming chair must demonstrate an outstanding record of scholarship commensurate with appointment at the rank of full Professor with tenure.

As an adjunct to its strong research program, the Department leads diverse training programs, including a partnership with the Department of Immunology for graduate PhD training, the Program in Microbiology and Immunology (PMI). PMI comprises 117 faculty with primary appointments in departments inside and outside the School of Medicine. Educational experience with a deep commitment to interdisciplinary training, mentoring, and advising all levels of trainees is essential for the incoming chair. We seek an educator with an outstanding record of training, mentoring, and career development of students, faculty, and staff.

The ideal Chair candidate will be an internationally recognized scholar and passionate educator who holds a PhD degree in microbiology, molecular genetics, or a related field and who will work collaboratively with the faculty, students, and staff of the Department and with the leadership of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to advance microbiology and molecular genetics. We seek a highly collaborative, outstanding communicator who is committed to demonstrating the values of diversity, equity and inclusion. Please submit a curriculum vitae and a letter of interest/cover letter via TalentCenter using requisition #23000465. Applications received by March 1, 2023, will be given priority.
