Job Details

The McCombs Institute for Early Detection of Cancer is creating a biobank of plasma samples from multiple clinical trials in a CLIA-certified laboratory. The Medical Technician II will process blood samples received from the clinic and follow SOPs as approved by the IRB at MD Anderson. Blood processing is a critical pre-analytical step to establish a biobank of samples to be used for biomarker discovery and validation.

This is an important job that requires a person to process blood from patients for clinical studies at MD Anderson.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Blood Specimen Processing

- Prepares any necessary supplies or reagents.
- Processes specimens following all institutional safety guidelines and CLIA procedures
- Prepares and aliquot specimens into appropriate tubes.
- Ensure specimens/aliquots are documented on Case Report Forms, Specimen Manager and RedCap if applicable.
- Adheres to IRB approved SOPs.

Instrumentation/Equipment:
- Operates instrumentation/equipment according to specific protocols
- Is able to perform and document standard service, quality control, and/or calibration procedures.
- Is able to troubleshoot and resolve common instrumentation/equipment problems

Inventory:
- Performs inventory of supplies/reagents according to departmental procedures.
- Maintains a clean and organized work station.
- Restocks consumable items as necessary.

Customer Service:
- Demonstrate cooperation when working with both internal and external customers.
- Demonstrates calmness under varying environmental circumstances. Remains willing and capable of assisting in crisis situations.

Training
- Train other employees, students, and/or fellows as needed.
- Follow established checklists during the training period.

Specimen Receiving and Shipping

- Receives samples from various collaborative sites following all quality control procedures
- Thoroughly reviews the contents of the shipment for any errors associated with samples, labels, volume or any other discrepancies found and report to lab manager and other relevant support team.
- Uses established specimen tracking database to acknowledge specimens and stores them appropriately in the freezers.
- Retrieves samples and ships to collaborators as needed following approved SOPs.
- Maintains proper shipping documentation and logs

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor's degree with major course work in one of the basic sciences. May substitute required education degree with equivalent experience on a one to one basis.

Preferred: Bachelors degree with major course work in one of the basic sciences.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: None.

Preferred: At least one year of clinical laboratory experience or specimen handling experience.
