Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Bates College, a private, highly selective liberal arts college in Maine, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) position to begin August 1, 2023. The position carries a five-course annual teaching load including introductory chemistry (lecture and lab), biochemistry, and perhaps an organic chemistry lab section. Candidates who have demonstrated success working with underrepresented or marginalized student populations are particularly encouraged to apply. Other opportunities available include supervising senior thesis students and professional development programing offered by the college. A Ph.D. is required by August 1, 2023. Additional relevant experience either before or after graduate school is seen as beneficial but is not required.

Review of applications will begin Monday, February 13, 2023, and continue until the position is filled. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

Applications should include: a cover letter describing the applicant’s interest in teaching at a small four-year liberal arts college; a curriculum vitae; a teaching statement which addresses the applicant’s preparation to teach introductory chemistry, biochemistry, and organic chemistry labs. The statement should also describe the applicant’s experience with, and interest in, applying inclusive pedagogy; two or three letters of recommendation, at least one of which discusses the applicant's teaching experience and preparation.
