The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a nine-month, full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-track faculty position in Statistics. This position is supervised by the Department Head of Mathematics and Statistics. Principal duties include research, teaching, and outreach with an emphasis on artificial intelligence, machine learning, Bayesian statistics, response surface modeling, or related area. This individual will become an integral member of a varied and active team of Mathematics and Statistics faculty supporting the Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics, the Master’s degree in Statistics, the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Data Science and the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics offered at SDSU.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Responsibilities include teaching and advising in undergraduate and graduate programs, and research, service, and outreach to the campus and region. Typical teaching duties include teaching three to six credits per semester of undergraduate and graduate courses and advising undergraduate and graduate student projects and research.  Research duties include developing and maintaining a regionally relevant research program in artificial intelligence, machine learning, Bayesian statistics, response surface modeling, or related area and developing external collaboration and outreach efforts and pursue external research funding and graduate student support. Excellence in teaching and enthusiasm for mentoring students is expected.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS include:

  • Ph.D. in statistics, data science, artificial intelligence, or closely related field by the starting date of the appointment.
  • Broad understanding of statistical theory with research in artificial intelligence, machine learning, Bayesian statistics, or response surface modeling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills.
  • Potential to be an effective teacher and mentor to students.
  • Potential to develop and maintain a record of externally funded scholarly research and publication.

SALARY:  Commensurate with qualifications.

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics currently has 20 tenure-track faculty, 13 full-time instructors, 80 graduate students, and 185 undergraduate majors. The department currently offers a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics, an M.S. in Statistics, a B.S. and M.S. in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics.
