JOB TITLE:  

Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Bioinformatics and Biology of Aging 

 

JOB PURPOSE:  

The Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Bioinformatics at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek an outstanding scientist who conducts mechanistic studies to address basic or translational questions in broadly defined Biology of Aging fields. Research interests could range from many aspects of the biology of aging, including but not limited to understanding the genetic basis of aging, longevity, disease, and behavior, cellular senescence, signaling networks determining life span, and aging of the brain. Candidates using a variety of model organisms, ranging from yeast to mouse will be considered. We seek candidates with demonstrated expertise in using advanced bioinformatic and data science approaches (genomics, epigenomics, and transcriptomics) combined with innovative laboratory research using model organisms. The University of Wyoming has created a new School of Computing that focuses on the application of computing in and across all disciplines. The school will be fundamentally interdisciplinary, using translational research to leverage new and critical computing technologies and approaches for advancing grand challenge problems in science and society. The School of Computing will house tenure track faculty many of which will have joint appointments with other academic units, in addition to affiliate faculty from other academic units. Applicants with interest in the School of Computing will have the opportunity to explore appropriate affiliate appointments.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The candidate will be expected to develop a strong, extramurally funded research program that integrates bioinformatics and cell and molecular biology to understand the biology of aging. The candidate is expected to be part of the interdisciplinary research team associated with the federally funded Wyoming Sensory Biology Center (WSBC) of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). The WSBC is a multi-disciplinary center that brings together investigators from four colleges (Arts and Sciences; Health Sciences; Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources; and Engineering and Physical Sciences) with expertise in diverse areas of Sensory Biology and experimental methodology and fosters interdisciplinary collaborations to address key issues in sensory system function and dysfunction, including aging. The candidate is expected to take advantage of and strengthen the Integrated Microscopy Core facility and the NIH funded Wyoming IDeA Networks for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Data Science Core. The candidate is expected to contribute to the teaching missions in the Physiology and Biology degrees and interdisciplinary graduate education through the development of new undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses that align with the candidate’s area of expertise.

 

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS: 

The candidate will be required to participate in appropriate service activities including, but not limited to, serving on departmental, college and university committees, graduate committees, search committees, among others. These service functions are in addition to discipline-related service activities at the national and international levels.

 

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have a doctoral degree or postdoctoral experience in bioinformatics/data science, genomics/epigenomics, molecular/cell biology, or related field, and evidence of an exceptional research record.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Multiple publications as a main contributing author in the field of bioinformatics in peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Evidence of ability to secure external grant funding in support of research.

Evidence of competency in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

Demonstrated capacity to utilize bioinformatics tools in research of biology of aging.

Evidence of competency in running a multidisciplinary biomedical research team.
