Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Animal Breeding Program Supervisor, plans, implements, and monitors the breeding of animals for biomedical research. Assists the Breeding Supervisor with training, task assignment, and monitoring the performance of technicians assigned to breeding activities. May also assist with husbandry and other technical support functions.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Acts as liaison between CCM (breeding, husbandry, and cagewash staff) and Principal Investigators/research staff to determine most appropriate breeding plan to meet production goals. Coordinates and leads the breeding teams to develop new colony projects and produce animals as requested by research groups.
  • Manages breeding colony maintenance including selection for mating, phenotype, genotype, breeding performance, weaning and replacement. Is responsible for primary communication with research groups to ensure their breeding projects succeed as desired.
  • Interprets and applies the National Institute of Health (NIH) "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals", City of Hope Laboratory Animal Care and Use Policies and Program, and all relevant Federal, State, and local regulations
  • Provides training and assistance to breeding, husbandry, and research staff on the breeding and production of research animals. Helps breeding staff trouble shoot breeding issues when needed.
  • Introduces researchers to the COH Animal Breeding Program and the use of the breeding database. Facilitates the import, development, and expansion of new projects. Oversees foster projects for quarantine and research purposes.
  • Establishes, maintains and manages database of breeding records. Is responsible for keeping database records up to date/accurate and for training research groups on the use of the database as needed.
  • Establishes and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)/guidelines as required and appropriate for the program.
  • Provides high-level technical assistance to research staff as required.


Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • A.S / A.A degree or extensive course work in animal science, biology, veterinary technology, or a related field. Experience may substitute for minimum education requirements.
  • 4 years of related animal care experience which includes breeding colony management and animal husbandry.

Required Certification/Licensure:
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATg) certification (or LAT certification with 5+ years of animal breeding experience) or (ALAT certification with 10+ years of animal breeding experience managing breeding colonies may substitute for LATg).

Preferred education, experience and skills:
  • B.S / B.A degree or extensive course work in animal science, biology, veterinary technology, or a related field.
  • AALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATg) and 5 years of breeding experience.
