Job Overview: The BEES Department invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level. The Betz Chair is funded by the Betz Endowment at Drexel University. We seek an innovative scientist and an experienced leader to build a program at the interface of ecology, evolution and environmental biology. We invite applications from outstanding researchers whose work focuses on ecology, evolution, conservation, global change, climate change impacts and adaptation, or coupled human-natural systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Leadership – The successful candidate will inspire cooperation and increase research productivity in an interdisciplinary department. Joint appointment at the Academy of Natural Sciences or other college and university units is possible. Teaching– Applicants must have demonstrated ability to teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Research – A strong externally funded research program is expected to complement funding from the Betz Endowment. Service – Participation on relevant committees at the departmental, college, or university level is expected and service outside the university is encouraged.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or Doctorate in biology, environmental science, or related field. 5+ years of university-level teaching and research experience. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Must be legally able to work in the United States if offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a tenure-track position at university level. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching. Track record of high-level scholarly research and productivity, including extramural funding and peer reviewed publication.

About the BEES Department

The BEES Department in the College of Arts and Sciences (CoAS) comprises a diverse group of ecologists, evolutionary biologists, geoscientists, and environmental scientists, and offers majors in geoscience, environmental studies and sustainability, ecology and evolution, and environmental science . We currently have about 140 undergraduate students across these majors and about 30 graduate students.

Academy of Natural Sciences

Many BEES faculty have joint appointments with the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) of Drexel, where they work as Curators in the Center for Systematic Biology and Evolution (CSBE) or as research scientists in the Patrick Center for Environmental Research (PCER). ANS is the oldest natural history museum in the western hemisphere, and CSBE collections comprise 20 million specimens of plants and animals widely used in research and education. The PCER, named after National Medal of Science winner and noted ecologist Dr. Ruth Patrick, is an important research center of ANS, with a long history of research and environmental assessment, particularly of aquatic ecosystems.

The Environmental Collaboratory

The Environmental Collaboratory (TEC) is a major university initiative to address the environmental challenges facing society. TEC is tasked to unite Drexel, the Academy, and communities of need in a shared endeavor to sustain our planet and mitigate its degradation. TEC coordinates, develops, integrates, and resources research, education, civic engagement, and public programming to solve problems and shape culture.
