Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is seeking a dynamic and innovative Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to be a driving force in maintaining a safe and healthy campus environment for all. Directly reporting to the Associate Vice President, Research Administration, the Director will play a critical role in defining and implementing innovative programs and policies that proactively address campus safety and environmental health concerns.

The Director will oversee a wide range of responsibilities from campus lab safety and hazardous waste management to radiation protection and occupational health and safety. This individual will also be responsible for developing and implementing education and training programs that inform and engage the university community, as well as for creating emergency safety protocols and participating in the tabletop emergency exercises. The Director will ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations and will serve as a public spokesperson for the University on matters related to EH&S. They will be responsible for developing and maintaining relevant reports, as well as leading the development of IT programs that contain regulatory information.

In addition to these technical responsibilities, the Director will also promote and advocate for diversity, inclusion, positive employee relations, teamwork and fair and equitable treatment of their employees. The Director will oversee all human, financial and physical resources related to EH&S and will work to create an organizational culture that values transparent, timely and collaborative communication. The Director will also maintain a strong safety culture and adhere to all safety policies, procedures and regulations, and proactively identify and address workplace hazards.

Required Qualifications:

Master's Degree and 5 years of related management experience; OR

Doctorate Degree and 3 years of related management experience.

Related experience: Management experience in a multi-component, complex, environmental health and safety program at an academic, government, or industrial institution with scientific and technical research programs.

Certification and Licensure

A successful candidate will have at least one nationally recognized certification in an environmental health and safety discipline such as Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Health Physicist or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
