Herma Heart Institute

The Herma Heart Institute (HHI) at Children’s Wisconsin (CW) is the largest pediatric cardiac care center in the state and highly ranked for its advancements in understanding and treating congenital heart disease, particularly complex single ventricle lesions. The HHI provides elite care for patients with congenital heart disease prenatally though adulthood, and as innovators, continue to challenge the standard of care through new treatment strategies. In partnership with our cutting-edge clinical pediatric cardiac care program, the HHI is committed to research and innovation and is paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in the etiology of congenital heart disease through external- and internal-funded basic science, clinical outcomes and translational research. Together, the integrated and multi-disciplinary team are positively improve the lives of affected children and their families in the state of Wisconsin, and beyond.

The Herma Heart Institute is striving to find new treatments, improve the care of our patients and ultimately discover the cause of congenital heart disease so it can be eradicated.  We have been a world leader in defining current and future strategies to improve the health and survival of these children. With our high volume and excellent surgical outcomes together with strong cardiovascular research facilities, we are uniquely poised to advance our Quality, Outcomes, and Research (QOR) program.

Children’s Research Institute (CRI)

Children’s Research Institute (CRI) was formed in 2004 with the focus of investing in bench to bedside research for the pediatric population in an effort to prevent disease, improve outcomes, and help kids and families manage living with chronic conditions. Through the CRI, Children’s annual investment in pediatric research is approximately $15-17 million.

Children’s Research Institute provides research infrastructure through shared service cores, nursing research, pilot grants, and administrative supplements for K-type grants awarded to pediatric investigators. CRI-supported shared service cores include flow cytometry, aquatics (zebrafish), histology, tissue banking, microscopic imaging, biostatistics, and a hospital-based pediatric translational research unit. Biostatistics support is provided through the section of Quantitative Health Sciences and includes support in study design, database development, and data analysis. Children’s Pediatric Translational Research Unit provides dedicated research personnel and space for clinical research procedures.   In addition, Children’s has a Nursing Research Department established to promote an evidence-based model of research to provide the best pediatric care possible. The CRI laboratory building consists of nearly 100,000 square feet of wet lab space specifically for pediatric research. Pediatric researchers have facilitated access to an additional 120,000 square feet of vivarium and other support infrastructure. Children’s research space is located on the same campus as Children’s Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin to encourage rich, multidisciplinary collaboration for child health research.
