Computer scientist beamline P21.2

DESY is one of the world's leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. With the storage ring PETRA III and the Free-Electron Laser FLASH, DESY offers a unique combination of photon sources to the scientific community. PETRA III, one of the most brilliant hard X-ray facilities world wide, currently provides 25 undulator beamlines for experiments utilizing the extreme source brilliance. High-energy X-rays are a powerful tool for the characterisation of polycrystalline materials and are utilized at beamline P21.2 using high-end automated experimental setups.

About your role:

  • Support of the computer-based experiments at beamline P21.2, including creation and provision of dedicated software solutions for specific experiments
  • Training of beamline staff and external users in terms of software
  • Development of software related to synchronization of fast detectors with actuators and monitoring devices
  • Development of tools for data reduction and feedback for automated data acquisition and visualization
  • Documentation of the software
  • Pursue a scientific project in relation to ongoing work at P21.2

About you:

  • Completed master's degree with Ph.D. in physics, materials science, computer science or related fields or equivalent experience and education
  • Knowledge in and experience with computer-based positioning, controls, digital data acquisition and analysis, and networks, preferentially at large scale science facilities with focus on experimental physics
  • Well-founded knowledge in programming, particularly in Python
  • Experience in and ability to program in a structured way
  • Good English communication skills, team player
  • Interest to work in a scientific environment
