AIMS (Accelerated Independence in Microbial Sciences)

Program at Washington University

The Department of Molecular Microbiology at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine is recruiting Fellows for a newly established AIMS (Accelerated Independence in Microbial Sciences) Program. This program provides talented, recent PhD and MD/PhD graduates a unique opportunity to establish an independent research program of their own as an alternative to a traditional post-doctoral position. AIMS Fellows are provided resources to run small, independent labs, mentorship, and a competitive starting salary ($90,000 plus benefits). The AIMS Fellow award is for three-years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding, including the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (DP5).

Candidates should submit a combined pdf of a cover letter, a full CV, a one page summary of previous work, and a one page statement of research plans as an AIMS Fellow. Please name the file: LASTNAME_AIMS23.

Applicants should solicit 3 letters of reference on their behalf that address why the candidate is ready to start an independent lab, how the candidate’s proposal has the potential for high impact and how it is distinct from existing work in their mentor’s laboratory. Letters should be sent directly from the reference and named CANDIDATENAME_REFERENCENAME.

Applicants working in any area of microbiology, including pathogenesis, will be considered. All material should be submitted to AIMS-Micro@email.wustl.edu by March 15, 2023.

Inquiries can be directed to AIMS-Micro@email.wustl.edu
