Position Summary

Assists in recruiting, selection, processing, evaluation and planning for all City of Hope's STEM, Training, and Education Programs (STEP), classroom visits and field trips, Girls Only Stem (GO Stem), Saturday Science Academy, Saturday Science Days, Science and Nutrition Summer Research, and additional K-12 science educational programming. Manages educational programs targeted to K-12 and college level students and provides support to all relevant research programs. Provides support to all programs with various services, including recruiting and tracking of students, as well as design and facilitation of program curriculum. Helps establish new programs as requested by the PI and program manager. Plans and implements community outreach programs to inform and educate parents about City of Hope's educational programs. Helps design and maintain STEP science educational website. Maintains relationships with all schools, districts, and cities belonging to the Foothill Consortium as they pertain to collaborative educational programs that fall under the auspices of the City of Hope's educational outreach efforts. Additionally, candidates need to have relevant basic research capabilities and experiences that will allow them to be competent in conducting and leading basic research tutorials.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Plans, implements and collaborates on the evaluation of all programs for students in all programs. May make programmatic decisions about educational content included in the programs. Works with the leadership team to recruit, select and process students for year-round research programs, with special emphasis on recruiting students from underrepresented minority groups.
• Set-up mock research experiments to test feasibility of implementation for student candidates. Demonstrate the ability to actively create new relevant age-appropriate curriculum/protocols from advance research topics.
• Helps track students and coordinates with participating schools for students to receive academic/volunteer credit.
• Helps establish new programs in partnership with school districts and national colleges. This will include: working to replicate the existing activities into other communities and school districts; developing a teacher professional development program under the auspices of the COH STEM Training and Education Program; maintaining and expanding relationships between COH faculty and science teachers (visits to classrooms and field trips to campus); and other programs developed by the steering committee.
• Assists with the development of non-curricular materials for the K-12 programs, including but not limited to t-shirts and other giveaways, displays for use in classrooms, and brochures for parents.
• Creates and maintains student records for educational programs and interfaces with the external program evaluators in utilizing these records. May conduct analysis of evaluation data for purposes of improving program design and implementation.
• Coordinates with Business Manager on grant administration: tracking and reporting time and effort; processing of stipends, honoraria, reimbursements, other grant expenditures; tracking and oversight of grant budget.
• Plans and manages meetings and events with parents, district, and local and national government representation.
• Represents City of Hope and the STEM Training and Education Program at all relevant meetings and conferences.
• Helps develop and maintain STEM Training and Education Program website.
• Assists with manuscript preparation, editing, and submission.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

• Bachelor's degree.
• A year of experience in the field of community relations or K-12 education. Experience in the sciences is required.

Preferred education, experience and skills:

• A degree in the relevant biomedical sciences and/or education with experience working as a high-level mentor or teacher assistant to students in a laboratory setting.
