Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) welcomes applications and nominations for appointment as Professor and Chair of its Biology Department beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year.

We are looking for an active leader and researcher who thinks strategically and supports the department in: continuous enrollment growth; expansion in research and teaching; innovative educational programs; diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives; and engagement with other constituencies on campus and beyond. The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in a life sciences-related discipline, should be qualified to receive tenure with a rank at full professor, and must have a proven record of leadership in academic settings, excellent interpersonal management and communication skills, strong research and publications supported by external funding.

The Biology Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in cell & molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, bioinformatics, and biophysics. Collaborative and interdisciplinary research and tech commercialization opportunities for students and faculty are encouraged on our campus. For example, candidates leading research in infectious disease, cancer biology, drug discovery/development, or preclinical toxicology and pharmacology may be considered for a joint appointment at IIT Research Institute (IITRI). IITRI is a top-quality, full-service Good Laboratory Practice-compliant preclinical contract research organization (CRO) established itself over the past 40 years to provide the complete IND-enabling preclinical safety and toxicology testing programs of a large CRO, with the personalized attention of a smaller organization. Illinois Tech is committed to enhancing the diversity of its students, faculty, and staff, and welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds, especially those underrepresented in the field. This emphasis on diversity is part of a larger strategic engagement and is strengthened by our position in the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, which is regarded as a center for African-American life and culture. Further, Illinois Tech prides itself on its identity as an opportunity engine. For example, Illinois Tech is ranked first among colleges and universities in Illinois for lifting students from families in the bottom 20% of income to the top 20%.

HOW TO APPLY

Applicants should submit the following:

  • A cover letter that speaks to leadership experience, research, and strategic engagement with diversity and inclusion
  • A curriculum vitae (with publication list)
  • Contact information for a minimum of four references

Questers and materials should be directed to biology_search@iit.edu. References will not be contacted without the consent of the applicant. Review of applications will begin January 10, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.
