Our mission as research center: Discover personalized medical solutions for environmentally triggered diseases to promote a healthier society in a rapidly changing world.

Helmholtz Munich is an emerging European hub for applied health AI. We drive biomedical discovery and build solutions that transform the future of medicine and invite applications for Principal Investigators in AI for Health (f/m/x).

We offer

  • a unique opportunity for scientific independence: establish your self at the forefront of translational health AI.
  • working with singular biomedical data from German clinics, laboratories and health institutions from one of the most advanced and best equipped healthcare systems in the world.
  • a generous start-up package (salary, positions, running costs) at the level of an ERC grant: our five year positions offer a tenure option for early-career investigators
  • a dynamic, multicultural, interdisciplinary, and highly collaborative research environment in Munich, one of the world’s most liveable cities.

Your responsibilities

You and your group will be embedded in the vibrant and thriving Health AI community in Munich including the Institute of AI for Health, Helmholtz AI, the Institute of Computational Biology, the Helmholtz Pioneer Campus, and ELLIS Munich (with the opportunity to join the ELLIS society).

We encourage both early-career and established researchers to put forward their original scientific proposal with a clear pathway to establishing themselves as drivers in the field. An outstanding academic track record, a collaborative and entrepreneurial mindset, and first leadership experience puts you in an ideal position to benefit from and nurture our Health AI environment. International and/or industry experience are considered an asset. You will lead the development and application of cutting-edge machine learning approaches to analyze and integrate complex multi-modal health data. Potential areas of research for your group include, but are not limited to longitudinal data analysis, deep representation learning, and interpretable/explainable/robust AI. Potential application areas include clinical time series analysis, electronic health records and sensor data integration, device optimization for clinical and home care, and comprehensive molecular and image data analysis for advanced therapy.

Your qualifications

We warmly welcome applications from scientists from diverse backgrounds.

Please submit your cover letter, CV, relevant degree certificates, list of publications (please highlight up to 3 with a brief explanation of their impact), your future research plan including your fit with Helmholtz Munich (max 3 pages) and contact details of up to three referees as a single PDF via our online submission system until 22 January 2023.

The virtual selection symposium including individual interviews will take place in January / February 2023 and a date will be announced here soon.

Munich, with its numerous lakes and its vicinity to the Alps, is considered to be one of the cities with the best quality of life worldwide. With its first-class universities and world-leading research institutions it offers an intellectually stimulating environment.

Provided that the prerequisites are fulfilled, a salary level up to E 15 is possible. Social benefits are based on the collective agreement for the federal public service (TVöD). The position is (initially) limited to five years, under certain circumstances an extension can be arranged.

To promote diversity, we welcome applications from talented people regardless of gender, cultural background, nationality, ethnicity, sexual identity, physical abilities, religion and age. Qualified applicants with physical disabilities will be given preference.
