Supervisory Health Scientist (Data Science) - Deputy Office Director

NIAID’s Office of Data Science and Emerging Technologies (ODSET) is seeking motivated and qualified candidates for a deputy office director (GS-15) position, opening soon. ODSET coordinates the development and implementation of NIAID’s data science strategy. The overall goal of the office is to enable the efficient use of data and computational methods to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. ODSET offers a collegial, multidisciplinary work environment at the world’s premier research Institute for infectious and immune-mediated diseases that is at the forefront of scientific discovery and the global response to pandemics and emerging infectious disease threats.

The deputy office director, ODSET, partners with the office director to share responsibility for the management of office programs and activities; oversees/directs the work of staff and fellows assigned to the office; and serves as a principal advisor to the office director in the fields of data science and emerging technologies and their application to NIAID's intramural and extramural biomedical research activities. In addition, the deputy office director performs a variety of program management and coordination, advisory/consultative/representational, and supervisory/managerial tasks and assignments that typically include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Evaluates data-related policies, guidance, and best practices across the breadth of NIAID research and directly affects major decisions and recommendations made by senior officials on research programs, developing therapeutic interventions and diagnostics, and responding to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, all critical to the NIAID mission Performs program management and coordination, advisory, consultative, representational, and supervisory tasks and assignments Develops and maintains strong partnerships across NIAID intramural and extramural divisions (as well as with the community outside NIAID) to optimize the development and implementation of data science methods, approaches, and technologies for the advancement of research and training in NIAID’s priority areas; and presents ideas and recommendations to division and NIAID leadership

Successful candidates for this position will be individuals enthusiastic about the enormous potential of data science to accelerate research and who want to be part of the world’s premier research and funding Institute for infectious and immune-mediated diseases and pandemic preparedness, with an annual budget of over $6 billion.

Preferred qualifications (but not required) include the following:

  • Research experience in biomedicine, with experience in infectious and immune-mediated diseases preferred
  • Formal training or extensive work experience in a data science domain, such as bioinformatics, biomedical informatics, clinical informatics, computer or information science, data sharing, ontology's/standards development, machine-learning/AI, systems modeling, and/or similar Experience in improving discovery, access, and use of research data, following the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles as well as experience in developing and implementing policy and giving policy guidance Experience leading a multidisciplinary scientific team; excellent written and verbal communication skills, including communicating across scientific disciplines, especially between computational scientists and biomedical scientists; communicating, presenting, and/or briefing senior leadership of a large organization; and collaborating with industry and nonprofit partners Demonstrated experience in establishing research collaborations across scientific disciplines; contributions to community development programs in data science or a related domain; and mentoring and advancing the development of staff and research trainees and teaching and training in biomedical and computational sciences Detail oriented and experience in working with complex administrative processes and systems in a large organization
