Responsibilities

Establishing a research area on the structure, function, and regulation of the macromolecular protein-nucleic acid complexes functioning in basic cellular processes of gene expression. The successful candidate is expected to possess outstanding academic qualifications and international recognition in the field of the function and structure of macromolecular protein-nucleic acid complexes. The successful candidate should employ high-resolution molecular biological and biochemical methods to investigate the relationship between the structure and function of macromolecular protein-nucleic acid complexes.

The successful candidate is expected to participate actively in the teaching of students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This includes holding lectures and seminars, running practical courses, as well as supervising theses for the degree programs offered by the Department of Chemistry.

Research should contribute to Universität Hamburg’s core research area of Infection Research (https://www.uni-hamburg.de/​en/​forschung/​forschungsprofil/​forschungsschwerpunkte.html). The research should also contribute to networking within the Department of Chemistry as well as with the Department of Biology and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). Further connections are possible with the research area of Photon and Nanosciences. Research activities with external research institutions in Hamburg, for example, the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), and the Leibniz Institute for Virology are also desirable.

The successful candidate is further expected to participate actively in the instruction of students pursuing a teacher training degree in the respective discipline.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Additional Criteria

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects.

The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment.
