The Department of Immunology in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington seeks applicants for up to two full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor positions and one full-time tenured Associate Professor position. The anticipated start date is September 2023. Successful candidates will be expected to establish a dynamic and successful research program; to excel at inclusive mentoring and teaching; to contribute to our departmental and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) missions; and to demonstrate professionalism in all aspects of work.

Our mission is to advance understanding of immune system function to ultimately enhance our ability to fight infectious disease, cancer, and autoimmune disease. Basic research of all aspects of immunology is critical to this mission, as well as translational research to develop new therapies. Our department includes eight adjunct faculty in clinical and other biomedical research units at UW, plus over 20 affiliate faculty at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Benaroya Research Institute, Institute for Systems Biology, and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Current research strengths include autoimmunity, innate immunity, adaptive immunity, cancer immunology, and infectious diseases. We welcome candidates with research interests in all areas of immunology.

All Immunology faculty contribute to our high-quality research training environment. We mentor a dynamic community of postdocs and students. Graduate students come from our Immunology PhD program, the Molecular & Cellular Biology (MCB) program and the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). We teach both graduate and undergraduate immunology courses.

We believe in the value of a diverse community, and encourage applications from individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds. Our DEI Roadmap articulates our goals for making changes that build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive community. Our DEI and Outreach Committees work to implement those goals and changes through inclusive community building and creating a supportive and equitable environment for diverse scholars.

The University of Washington is one of the top research institutions in the US, with over $1.6 billion in sponsored awards in FY22. UW is located in the Seattle metropolitan area, with a dynamic, multicultural community of 3.5 million people and a range of ecosystems from mountains to rain forests. The UW serves a diverse population of 80,000 students, faculty and staff, including over 30% first-generation college students, over 25% Pell grant students, and faculty and staff from over 70 countries.

Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1 - June 30); Associate Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with the same 12-month service period (July 1 - June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July - June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Candidates must have a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in a relevant field, or a foreign equivalent.
