Position Purpose:

The Assistant in Instruction in Biology is primarily responsible for developing, teaching students, and mentoring other instructors in our sophomore level course-based undergraduate research experience (BIO204). This course explores questions that span a range of disciplinary approaches, from molecular to ecological. This position will collaborate with faculty to deliver an engaging curriculum grounded in evidence-based practices for course-based research in biology and writing in the discipline. As well, this position will use inclusive pedagogies and approaches to ensure the success of all students. The position will be responsible for maintenance, upkeep, and user training of instrumentation associated with the course and for advising, training, and overseeing student workers and post baccalaureate scholars.

Job Duties:

  • Teach four sections of BIO 204 each academic year (2 fall, 2 winter) in coordination with faculty in the department.
  • Support faculty who are teaching concurrent sections of BIO 204.
  • Train faculty who are rotating into BIO 204.
  • Implement protocols and analyses, currently focused in the evaluation of microbiomes.
  • Hire and train TAs for all sections of BIO 204.
  • Assist with training and supervision of postbacs within the department as it relates to BIO 204.
  • Coordinate sample collection and supplies for BIO 204.
  • Set up for all BIO 204 sections (with TA or postbac help as appropriate).
  • Coordinate BIO204 equipment maintenance and repair with STEM support staff.
  • Maintain and update any lab materials (e.g., manuals).
  • Maintain both internal and external collaborations as they relate to BIO 204 research experiences.
  • Devote time and effort in continual BIO 204 course and laboratory development with faculty input: frame and pilot the approach to new or iterative research questions.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. required


  • Strong background in STEM inclusive pedagogy.
