Description:

The Section of Hematology/Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a Research Specialist.

This position will support the Sickle Cell Transition Adolescent-Adult Readiness (STAR) research study. This study is imbedded in one of the largest comprehensive sickle cell centers in the Midwest, and one that is known for a lifespan approach to care of this complex inherited blood disorder. The project is funded by Division of Specialized Care for Children to develop novel educational material, activities, and training for patients, parents, advocates, and health care coordinators.

Duties:

    • Plans and coordinates the implementation of the research protocol.
    • Performs surveys, interviews, observations or uses other methods according to established research protocols.
    • Assists in the development of data collection instruments.
    • Maintains detailed records of results and prepare written reports.
    • Maintains and processes required paperwork.
    • Prepares data for analysis and execute details of studies.
    • Performs analysis and document results.
    • May conduct literature searches.
    • Orders study supplies and maintain inventories.
    • Participates in meetings and workgroups related to the project.
    • Assist with the development and maintenance of the IRB approval for all study activities.
    • Participates in IRB human subjects training, maintains appropriate professional competencies, and assures staff compliance with human subjects training requirements.
    • Conduct research study activities and tasks as needed.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.
    • Participate in pediatric hematology clinic at UI Health.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in social science or related field required. Master's degree in Public Health, Sociology or Psychology or enrolled in a qualifying program highly preferred.
    • A minimum of 3 years related research experience.
    • Possesses and applies advanced knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
    • Experience studying and/or implementing evidence-based education practices.
    • Interest in and ability to design, implement, and evaluate educational material and development programs.
    • Experience working with health care professionals, students, patients and families.
    • Lived experience with sickle cell disease and adolescent-adult transition of care at UI Health.
    • Experience with public speaking as a sickle cell disease advocate.
    • Able to join pediatric clinic on Wednesdays all day.
