Chair, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology

 

West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine, located in Morgantown, WV, seeks an innovative, dynamic, and collaborative leader and mentor to serve as Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology (MICB; https://medicine.wvu.edu/micro).

MICB has a history of providing outstanding undergraduate, graduate and professional training and well-funded research programs.  The Deparment administers a Ph.D. degree-granting program in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis a B.S. program in Immunonlogy and Medical Microbiology.  MICB has 13 tenured/tenure-track, 5 teaching, and 3 research/service faculty members, 7 postdoctoral researchers, 10 staff, 35 graduate students and more than 70 undergraduate majors.  MICB’s research programs include vaccine development, neuroinflammation, microbial pathogenesis and immunity, and cell biology.  Several faculty are cross-appointed in the WVU Cancer Institute, and together comprise a strong basic and translational oncology and cancer immunology research focus.  Translational research is also supported by close ties with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, Vaccine Development center and the Center for Basic and Translational Stroke Research, as well as P20 Center of Biomedical Research Excellence grants in Tumor Microenvironment and Visual Sciences. Department faculty hold extramural research support from NIH, CDC, DoD, State agencies, regional and national foundations, and industry.

Duties of the Chair include providing strategic direction to all aspects of the Department. The new Chair will bring proven leadership skills to the position, a service orientation, the ability to nurture change in a collegial manner, to successfully leverage existing collaborative opportunities within the Health Sciences Center and across the University campus, and to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or M.D. degree in the fields of Microbiology, Immunology, Cell Biology or a related STEM discipline and have ten or more years of experience in higher education. Demonstration of successful fiscal and personnel management is expected, as well as creative, innovative program development.  Additional qualifications include:  nationally recognized active research program, proven record of teaching and mentoring of students at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels, expertise with trainee and faculty recruiting and retention, and commitment to transparent leadership, cross-disciplinary team-building, and institutional growth.  The successful applicant will possess academic credentials that merit appointment as a tenured Associate Professor or Professor.

Ruby Memorial Hospital with a Level I Trauma Center, WVU Children’s Hospital, WVU Cancer Institute, WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute and the 70-bed Chestnut Ridge Psychiatric Facility.  

Morgantown has approximately 31,000 residents and is ranked among the most livable small cities in the countryThe area offers the cultural diversity and amenities of a large city in a safe, family-friendly environment.
