Columbia University’s Department of Dermatology at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons invites applicants for Postdoctoral Research Scientist position to work in the laboratory of Dr. Arianna Kim and Dr. David Bickers. The laboratory focuses on understanding the dynamics of genetic and epigenetic aberrations underlying the pathological growth of Hedgehog (Hh)-dependent skin cancers and how their interplay with cellular signaling and tumor microenvironment contributes to drug resistance and tumor recurrence. Using unique preclinical models of skin cancers developed in the laboratory, successful candidates will investigate disease mechanisms aimed at developing novel mechanism-driven treatment approaches, that can be rapidly translated into clinical trials. Typical activities will include designing and performing in vitro and in vivo studies and data analysis, preparing project reports and manuscripts, participating in seminars, and collaborating on research grant applications.

Areas of current research interest include:

• Defining the role of SWItch/Sucrose NonFermentable (SWI/SNF) nucleosome remodeling complexes in BCC growth and the mechanisms by which bromodomain-containing proteins of this complex drive resistance to the currently available Hh-targeted therapy

• Understanding how Hh signaling favors tumor-promoting microenvironment and the impact of Hh inhibition on immunotherapy

• Identifying aging-associated epigenetic alterations and inflammatory profiles that can be targeted to reduce tumor burden in patients with nonmelanoma skin cancers

Minimum Degree Required: PhD, MD/PhD, or MD in medical sciences or a related discipline.

Position Qualifications: We are seeking highly motivated candidates with experience in a broad array of technologies including molecular and cell biology methodologies, cell culture, and microscopy. Research experience with mouse models is required. Successful candidates should have a record of scientific productivity, excellent oral and written communications skills, a strong work ethic, and the ability to work independently and effectively complete tasks in a timely manner.

Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge and previous experience in epigenetics are desirable but not required.
