The Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics (MIMG) in The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UT Health San Antonio) is seeking a new Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor with a research focus on medically relevant viral pathogens.  Researchers who investigate fundamental mechanisms of viral pathogenesis or virus-host interactions using cutting-edge approaches are invited to apply, with preference given to those working on emerging/re-emerging viruses. The successful candidate will direct an independent research program and contribute to graduate and medical education.  They will have access to a suite of BSL-3/ABSL-3 laboratories approved for use with Tier-1 select agents, as maintained by MIMG.  A competitive start-up package and outstanding laboratory space are available, with rank and salary commensurate with experience.

This faculty recruitment is part of a significant growth phase of MIMG research programs.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a highly collaborative group of 19 MIMG faculty working on virology, viral/bacterial co-infection, mucosal immunology, immune defense, autoimmunity, vaccine development, cancer immunology and epigenetics of the immune response (https://lsom.uthscsa.edu/mimg/faculty-list/).  They will also join a growing community of virologists, including new recruitments from other departments at UT Health San Antonio and those currently working at the nearby Texas Biomedical Research Institute, which also houses BSL-4/ABSL-4 laboratories.

The Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine is among the top 50 medical schools in the nation.  With an annual research budget of $350 million, UT Health San Antonio is a highly integrated and translational research community, which also includes an NCI-designated cancer center, the Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute, the Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies, the Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases, the South Texas Research Facility and a new School of Public Health (jointly operated with the University of Texas at San Antonio), in addition to multiple clinical facilities.  San Antonio is the 7th largest city in the U.S. with a low cost of living and an excellent public school system.  It has a beautiful historical downtown area featuring the Riverwalk with diverse entertainments and fine restaurants.  It is also a gateway to the scenic Texas Hill Country with many recreational options.
