The University of Vermont (UVM) invites applications and nominations for Chair of the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (ASCI) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The Department is a multidisciplinary unit with research, instruction, and public outreach responsibilities. We seek a strong leader with the vision and management skills to advance the department while nurturing current programs of excellence. Areas of scholarly focus in ASCI include: lactation & mammary gland biology; genetics & genomics; nutrition & metabolism; dairy cattle health and management; dairy product composition and quality; and farm biosecurity. ASCI is committed to excellence in undergraduate animal sciences teaching and advising with four areas of emphasis: Pre-veterinary & Pre-professional training; Equine science; Dairy science; and Zoos, Exotics, and Companion Animals. Department outreach focuses on dairy and equine production and management. The department also administers the Animal Biosciences Graduate Program, which offers graduate degrees at both the MS and PhD levels. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences consists of six academic departments with 88 faculty members and 1,570 students. The ASCI department is among the largest in the college, serving approximately 360 undergraduate and graduate students. Special animal facilities associated within the college for teaching and research can be found at https://www.uvm.edu/cals and include the Paul R. Miller Research and Education Center, the Ellen A. Hardacre Equine Center, and the Morgan Horse Farm. Location of the Robert Larner College of Medicine and The University of Vermont Medical Center on campus provides important research linkages between ASCI and the biomedical sciences. We seek candidates who have demonstrated administrative expertise to lead a multifaceted department with a strong commitment to academic excellence in research, undergraduate & graduate education, and advising. The successful candidate will sustain a vigorous sponsored research program and teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will support oversight of the Miller Research and Education Center, Ellen A. Hardacre Equine Center, and Morgan Horse Farm. Candidates must have well-developed leadership and communication skills, demonstrated ability to promote the success of others, a record of commitment to affirmative action and cultural diversity, and a PhD or equivalent in Animal Sciences or other related life science areas. Candidates must have a productive and widely respected research program in the field of animal science meriting a tenured appointment, preferably at the rank of full professor. Candidates must also have an understanding of the impact of basic and applied research and extension within the mission of a land-grant university. Critical is the capacity to develop a strong working relationship with university partners, such as UVM’s Food Systems Research Center, and government and agricultural stakeholders, including the Vermont dairy industry. As Chair, the successful candidate will report to the Dean of Agriculture and Life Sciences, with an expectation to provide leadership throughout the calendar year.
