The Stony Brook University Renaissance School of Medicine (RSOM) is recruiting for a Vice Dean for Research to serve as the RSOM's chief research officer and leader of the biomedical research enterprise of Stony Brook Medicine. This position reports directly to the Dean. Working closely with the Office of the Vice President of Research, the Office of the Vice Dean supports a vibrant base of scientists engaged in all aspects of biomedical discovery - basic, translational and clinical research, as well as biotechnology and drug development. At the foundation of these efforts is a strong research infrastructure populated with state-of-the-art core facilities dedicated to providing rapid turnaround, high-quality data and robust results. In addition, the Office of the Vice Dean offers expert assistance in identifying and developing intellectual property, navigating the complex regulatory/compliance issues integral to biomedical research, and concept-based experimental design. The Office identifies and targets emerging opportunities in extramural funding sources that support areas of research interests and expertise on our campus.

The primary responsibilities of the Vice Dean for Research for the RSOM include:

  • Oversight of the core facilities. Determine how to best coordinate and modernize the cores so they run as businesses and upgrade obsolete technology. Areas that require specific investment include biostatistics, advanced microscopy, flow cytometry, single cell sequencing, and lipidomics/proteomics/metabolomics.
  • Guide the implementation of the research strategic plan for the RSOM and lead the effort to formulate a new strategic plan within the first 1-2 years.
  • Enhance clinical research, increase the number of active clinical trials, and integrate research with the clinical enterprise, including support for the CTSA application and Long Island Network for Clinical and Translational Science.
  • Work with Clinical and Basic Science Chairs, Center and Institute Directors, Health Sciences Schools, West Campus Colleges, and affiliated institutions (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Northport VA, etc.) to increase the number of NIH-funded cross-disciplinary research and research training programs.
  • Develop a robust infrastructure to support clinical research including clinical trials office, biostatistics, budgeting, regulatory, etc.
  • Strengthen the development of research-intensive learners and faculty through initiatives such as physician-scientist training programs and K Club to increase the number of institutional training grants and career development awards.
  • Provide assistance to Department Chairs in the recruitment and retention of research faculty, including service on the respective search committees.
  • Organize RSOM-wide research symposia of widespread interest.
  • Coordinate and grow the administrative support of grant submissions and follow-up activities to facilitate external funding.
  • Coordinate the Targeted Research Opportunities (TRO) Programs, Bridge Funding Program, Clinical Research Funding and related funds and track the return on investment for these initiatives.
  • Represent the RSOM on a number of externally facing scientific interactions and cooperation with other institutions
  • Frequently represent the RSOM on important internal committees.
  • Oversee the Office of Scientific Affairs that includes five direct reports, and a total of 65 staff members, approximately half of whom staff the Division of Laboratory Animal Research.
  • Advance scientific highlights and accomplishments with RSOM communications.
  • Oversee the assignment and allocation of research space within the RSOM. Create a policy for space utilization.
  • Help unfunded investigators become funded through mentoring programs, workshops, pre-submission grant review, and catalyzing scientific "teams".
  • Promote the recruitment and retention of a diverse research faculty and workforce.
  • Promote community outreach and engagement in the research enterprise, particularly to benefit underserved communities.
