Position Description:

The School of Interdisciplinary Science (SIS) in the Faculty of Science at McMaster University invites applications for a teaching stream position in Interdisciplinary Science at the Assistant Professor level to commence July 1, 2023. We are interested in candidates with expertise that bridges human and population-level health indicators from an interdisciplinary perspective. The ideal candidate will have experience applying both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Candidates should have a strong track record of innovative, evidence-based teaching. We are particularly interested in candidates who embed experiential learning, science communication, and community engagement in their teaching practice. 
Established in 2016, SIS is the youngest academic unit in the Faculty of Science and is home to three interdisciplinary undergraduate programs in Integrated Science, Life Sciences, and Medical Radiation Sciences. It was created with the mandate to foster exploration and discovery while emphasizing experiential, collaborative, and student-centered learning. SIS forms a hub for pedagogical innovation, science literacy and numeracy, and STEM-based community engagement in the Faculty of Science. Our undergraduate curricula focus on providing skills in science communication, community engagement, and synthesis of multiple forms of knowledge. SIS has a current complement of 21 faculty members and serves nearly 2,000 students. Applicants must be able to teach core undergraduate courses in all our programs in the realm of human health and disease, research methods, data analytics, ethics, and societal applications of science. Potential courses include qualitative and population research methods and laboratory courses related to data science and knowledge translation. A demonstrated record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level is required. Interest and/or experience in pedagogical innovation and research, as well as undergraduate student supervision, are considered an asset. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant interdisciplinary science field at the time of appointment. Administrative work is expected.

  • a teaching dossier comprising a statement of teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching experience and effectiveness

  • the names and full contact information of at least three referees.  Letters of reference are not required and will not be reviewed at the application stage; the Department will request letters of recommendation from referees at later stages of the search process.
