Program Overview

The NIMH seeks a motivated, experienced researcher with expertise in prevention and early intervention research to serve as the Associate Director for Prevention Research. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating NIMH’s prevention-related efforts in coordination with the Office of the Director, the Division of Services and Intervention Research, and other NIMH Divisions and Offices. This individual will also develop and manage a portfolio of innovative grant-supported research in the Treatment and Preventive Intervention Research Branch (TPIRB) in the Division of Services and Intervention Research (DSIR) that focuses on developing, refining, and testing preventive and early intervention approaches that are relevant across the life course, spanning early childhood through adulthood.

Position Duties

As Associate Director for Prevention Research, the incumbent coordinates NIMH’s prevention-related initiatives. In this capacity, the incumbent:

  • Collaborates with the NIMH Office of the Director and other NIMH divisions and Offices in building and managing an Institute-wide, integrated prevention research program.
  • Collaborates with the NIMH Intramural Program, other NIH Institutes, Federal agencies, and outside organizations.
  • Represents NIMH on interagency and interdepartmental policy and program development initiatives in prevention.
  • Coordinates with the NIMH Office of Science Policy, Planning, and Communication to respond to prevention-related inquiries and disseminate research knowledge.
  • Assists the Institute in developing public health policy by preparing material in response to Congressional and Administration requests and reviews draft Congressional testimonies of other agency officials.

Additional responsibilities include administering and managing a portfolio of extramural research grants; collaborating with researchers and Program Officers from related scientific programs within NIMH, NIH, HHS, and other public and private funding agencies; and communicating DSIR research priorities via outreach to the scientific community (e.g., conference presentations, workshops, and special journal issues). The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of research grants that aim to develop, optimize, test, and disseminate innovative preventive and early intervention strategies and facilitate the developing and implementation of innovative prevention research methods.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (e.g., M.D., DSW, Sc.D.) from an accredited college or university, with graduate training in developmental psychopathology/psychopathology, prevention, and intervention research methods. Expertise related to risk/protective factors, etiology, prevalence, course, and outcomes of mental disorders, including ethnic/racial cultural factors in mental health and mental disorders, is also relevant. Experience in mental health research and research administration and data-based publications are prerequisites for this position. Experience managing research programs and coordinating professional groups and associations' activities is also desirable. Strong organizational, oral, writing and communication skills are required. Experience with the grants review process is preferable. The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and public financial disclosure requirements.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The position will be posted at the GS-15 federal government salary grades, with an annual salary between $148,484.00 and $176,300.00.
