As one of the campuses of the University of British Columbia, UBC Okanagan offers a globally recognized degree at a more intimate campus with 9,600 undergraduates and 1,065 graduate students. Biology https://biology.ok.ubc.ca/ is one of four departments within the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science. The Biology Department’s 28 faculty are engaged in mentoring >900 undergraduate students in five majors (Biology; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Microbiology; Ecology, Evolutionary and Conservation Biology; Zoology), as well as >80 MSc and PhD students. In the past five years, the department has received a total of $15 million in research funding to support >400 different projects. The newly recruited Head will join Biology at an exciting time, as we seek to establish the department as a leader in biology education and within strategic areas of research.  The successful candidate will also be supported by the Dean in application for a UBCO Principal’s Research Chair (Tier 1), for additional salary and research support.  The candidate will have access to excellent research infrastructure, including high performance computing clusters (up to 16,000 CPU cores and 200 GPUs).

The ideal candidate will be in the early stages of the Full Professor rank, although a senior Associate Professor may also be considered. The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, and administration, with a proven ability to lead and motivate faculty, staff, and students. Evidence of strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is required.

The candidate’s field of research specialization should be computational biology.  Computational biology is broadly defined to include the application of bioinformatics, biophysics, biostatistics, mathematical biology, theoretical biology, data science, or other quantitative methods to areas of inquiry that may include genomics, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, plant or animal physiology, and ecology.

The Head will provide administrative, intellectual, and academic leadership of the department and will serve on the Faculty of Science leadership team. Responsibilities of the Head include overseeing the overall operation of the Biology Department including mentoring and advocating for faculty, staff and students within the Faculty and the University. Direct experience with managing tenure and promotion processes and familiarity with budgeting are considered assets. As a faculty member of the Biology Department, the Head will be expected to have a PhD in Biology, maintain an active research program, supervise graduate students, and contribute otherwise to teaching. The successful candidate must be eligible to hold a tenured position at rank at the University of British Columbia. The anticipated start date for the professorial position is July 1, 2023.  The position of Head will be available July 1, 2023 with a five-year renewable term. The Head will report directly to the Dean of Science.

The ideal candidate will also have a strong commitment to Indigenous engagement. As part of the University’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, UBC Okanagan has committed to supporting and implementing five key commitments, which can be found at https://ok.ubc.ca/about/indigenous-engagement/.

UBC Okanagan is located in the city of Kelowna, on the traditional and unceded territory of the Syilx people of the Okanagan nation.  Kelowna is connected by direct flights to major Canadian and USA cities and the region is considered one of the most desirable regions to live in Canada.
