Resident Director of the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory

The Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking talented applicants for the position of Director of the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL). ADL is a full-service laboratory with histopathology, necropsy, virology, serology, microbiology, parasitology, and molecular biology sections. The ADL is part of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accredited tripartite Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System (PADLS) (http://www.padls.org) and works in close connection with other PADLS labs, state, and federal agencies.

Position Requirements:

Initial and subsequent appointments as Director are for 5-year terms with academic and administrative review initiated in the 4th year of each term. The Director is expected to qualify for and hold a position of Associate Clinical Professor or Clinical Professor in the department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences within the College of Agricultural Sciences. This is a 48-week non-tenure track faculty appointment with rank and salary dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Education and Experience:

Applicants must have a DVM/VMD or equivalent and an advanced degree (MS and/or PhD) in a related field of study; at least 5 years veterinary diagnostic laboratory work experience; and at least five years of supervisory experience that could include practice management, quality management, regulatory policy, management of personnel and budgets, or cooperation with governmental agencies. Board certification (or eligibility for certification) in a veterinary laboratory-related specialty is preferred and demonstrated achievement in diagnostic medicine and/or outreach is essential. The Director is expected to uphold and facilitate the ADL mission and vision, including promotion of the standards of excellence within laboratory sections and adherence to AAVLD quality principles. The successful candidate must possess demonstrated leadership, administrative, management and entrepreneurial skills, in keeping with the ADL's commitment to excellence in diagnostic service. This position is primarily administrative overseeing operations of the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory and working with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and directors from the other PADLS labs. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to diagnostic service in one or more laboratory sections depending on their area of expertise. The position may include 10-20% Research and/or Teaching depending on the background, expertise, and interests of the candidate. The Director must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Ability to actively support and promote the College's diversity goals is a requirement.
