Search for the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Division

University of Southern California, Information Sciences Institute

Marina del Rey, California

The Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California (USC/ISI) seeks an innovative, collaborative, and inspiring leader to serve as its next Director of the Artificial Intelligence Division (Director). Reporting to the Executive Director of ISI, Dr. Craig Knoblock, the Director will provide oversight and guidance to ISI’s largest research division, which comprises 150 world-class faculty, research staff, and students.

The Information Sciences Institute, a unit of the Viterbi School of Engineering, is a global leader in the research and development of advanced artificial intelligence, computer networks, cybersecurity, medical informatics, and other computing and communications technologies. ISI’s 400 faculty, professional staff, and graduate students carry out extraordinary information sciences research at three distinct locations—Marina del Rey, California, where this position will be located; Arlington, Virginia; and Waltham, Massachusetts.

USC Viterbi School of Engineering, consistently ranked among the top ten engineering schools in the nation, is achieving new heights through research and educational leadership in crucial realms of technology and innovation: information sciences, biomedical engineering, and homeland security, among others. ISI is the largest research institute in Viterbi, and brings in approximately half of the School’s external research funding.

ISI’s incoming Director of the AI Division will join the team at an exciting time, as the Institute celebrates its 50th anniversary. In the five decades since its establishment, ISI has been a pioneer in research and development of advanced information processing, computer, and communications technologies, and now seeks a leader capable of guiding the AI division into its next chapter.

The incoming Director will bring experienced leadership and an impeccable research reputation to a growing organization seeking to recruit and retain outstanding talent to further the Division’s reach and impact in California, nationally, and globally. They will partner with ISI leadership to help grow the strong existing research funding, including identifying new sources of funding and mentoring new hires. As the Division continues to grow and diversify, they will also play a key role in initiatives relating to organizational development and governance; recruitment and retention; diversity, equity, and inclusion; culture building; and long-term strategic planning.
