The University of Georgia announces openings for two tenure track faculty members at the Assistant or early Associate Professor level in the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center in any area of biomedical, microbial, or plant glycoscience. Applications will be considered from talented and accomplished investigators who currently maintain or exhibit potential for developing vigorous research programs. We seek outstanding scientists who are addressing fundamental biological problems whose research either complements or expands existing strengths in the Center, including biological functions of glycans and analytical approaches that can benefit from our state of the art Computational, NMR, and Mass Spectrometry infrastructure present in the Center (www.ccrc.uga.edu). Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following topics: Biomedical Glycoscience: roles of glycans and glycoconjugates in disease processes (such as cancer, infection, inflammation, immunology, cell signaling, and metabolic, neural, and genetic disorders); microbial glycobiology; enzymology and structural biology of glycan biosynthesis and/or degradation; chemical and chemoenzymatic glycan synthesis; developmental glycobiology; novel technologies for investigating glycan dynamics in cells or tissues. Plant Cell Wall Glycoscience: new analytical approaches to define wall structure and architecture; plant cell wall biosynthesis, remodeling and breakdown; roles of glycans and glycoconjugates in plant growth, development and response to biotic and abiotic stress; cell biology of plant cell walls; plant cell wall-microbe interactions, including microbial utilization or recognition of wall components in environmental or host models; enzymology and structural biology of cell wall active enzymes; structure-function relationships of cell wall glycans and glycoconjugates. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Biological, Biomedical, Chemical, Plant, or Biochemical Sciences, at least three years relevant postdoctoral research experience, an outstanding publication record and a well-developed research plan. Successful candidates will be expected to build or maintain a vibrant, extramurally-funded research program that integrates with and leverages the highly collaborative research environment at the CCRC and UGA. Successful candidates will have access to a robust graduate student training program (partially supported by an NIH training grant in Glycoscience), highly motivated undergraduate trainees, and the opportunity to participate in education at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. An attractive start-up package with highly competitive conditions of employment will be offered.
