The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in the area of Plant-Pathogen/Microbiome Interactions, with a start date of January 1, 2023 or later. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) or in exceptional cases as an Associate Professor (with tenure).

The successful candidate will develop a world class research program in the area of Plant-Pathogen/Microbiome Interactions with applications to agricultural biotechnology. Plants are associated with diverse communities of pathogenic, mutualistic and commensal microbes with interactions that affect plant yield, stress resistance, disease susceptibility, and bioproduct synthesis. A translational research program is expected where fundamental discoveries in Plant-Pathogen/Microbiome Interactions will lead to improved crops that are grown in Alberta and Canada. The use of cutting-edge molecular tools such as Gene Editing and Tilling by Sequencing in crop plants are considered assets. The successful candidate will lead research initiatives within the strategic interdisciplinary themes at the University of Calgary and build on current strengths in the plant biology discipline. Opportunities are available to engage broadly in research collaborations with colleagues across disciplines at the University of Calgary, including researchers belonging to the Infections, Inflammation and Chronic Diseases (IICD) theme.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a vibrant and internationally recognized, externally funded research program, as well as provide excellent, innovative education for undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will assist in meeting the institutional goals outlined in the recently developed “Framework for Growth” and in the strategic plan of the Faculty of Science. The “Framework for Growth" is centered around three big ideas that will differentiate our entrepreneurial university and drive growth: transdisciplinary scholarship, deeper community partnerships, and future-focused delivery of programs that will see us expand the flexibility and customizability of the UCalgary experience. To learn more about this vision please see: https://www.ucalgary.ca/president/growth.

The successful candidate must possess a PhD in molecular biology and postdoctoral research experience in plant molecular biology with a specialization in Plant-Pathogen/Microbiome Interactions and related disciplines.

Applicants at the Assistant Professor rank must have a strong publication record demonstrating excellence in research related Plant-Pathogen/Microbiome Interactions. Prior success in obtaining peer-reviewed funding will be an asset. Candidates must also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and the use of contemporary approaches to teaching.

The successful candidate at the Associate Professor rank must have a strong track record of publications in high quality journals in the area of Plant-Pathogen/Microbiome Interactions as it relates to enhanced crop production, as well as evidence of securing ongoing external and industrial research funding. They must also have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the University level that utilizes contemporary approaches to teaching, and evidence of effective graduate student supervision.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in service activities, as appropriate.
