As a Biotransformation Scientist, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality metabolism data for molecules across the GSK portfolio, allowing key decisions to be made, with impact on drug design, human safety and drug submission.

The Biotransformation Team (US) is part of the Global Disposition and Biotransformation Department within DMPK and is responsible for all metabolite identification activities that support a drug candidate from early discovery to clinical development, working with DMPK Project Representatives, Medicinal Chemists, Toxicologists and Clinical colleagues, through the coordinated use of analytical methods, including LC, MS, and NMR. The group uses state-of-the-art equipment in a modern laboratory and collaborates closely with other biotransformation scientists around the world in GSK. The successful candidate will have a strong background in biotransformation science and metabolite identification, with experience in designing, executing, and interpreting metabolism studies to aid Project Teams.

  • Design and deliver metabolism studies in line with Discovery and Development DMPK key deliverables (acting as Study Director or Study Monitor)
  • Provide mass spectrometry, together with, metabolite identification and prediction expertise to the DMPK organization
  • Process results from assays using appropriate software and evaluate analytical data leading to authorship/review of high-quality reports, publications and regulatory dossiers
  • Understand, interpret, and communicate biotransformation data to Project Representatives and key stakeholders
  • Be able to troubleshoot, problem solve and define best practice for biotransformation studies
  • Drive innovation by investigating and implementing new analytical technologies and procedures
  • Contribute to the scientific strategy to enhance the value of biotransformation science to support a diversified GSK portfolio
  • Create internal and external networks to drive science within their discipline
  • Initiate new research directions and novel strategies to achieve project or department goals in biotransformation and analytical science (e.g., novel assays or experimental approaches, understanding the impact of drug metabolism on human safety and drug design). May identify new scientific opportunities for primary discipline
  • Matrix as a DMPK subject matter expert with Project Representatives around the planning and timing of biotransformation studies and the impact on drug development
  • Collaborate with others as required to ensure optimal delivery of biotransformation studies e.g., Clinical organization, Medicinal Chemistry to support the progression of projects
  • Ensure data integrity and data accessibility through the GSK R&D data domains
  • Ensure compliance with GSK Values and Policies

  • BS + 5 years' experience in relevant discipline
  • MS + 3 years' experience in relevant discipline
  • PhD in relevant discipline
  • Two or more years of experience in metabolite characterization and quantification using mass spectrometry
  • Two or more years of experience in the development of bespoke LC-MS methodologies for structure elucidation using state-of-the-art high-resolution instrumentation
  • Two or more years of experience in generating high quality data and reports
  • Two or more years of experience in vitro and in vivo approaches to understand biotransformation issues
  • One or more years of experience in all aspects of the biotransformation discipline and an ability to integrate this knowledge into drug discovery and development programs


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
  • HPLC and chromotography skills
  • Knowledge of spectroscopic techniques other than mass spectrometry, for example, NMR would be an advantage
  • Experience in Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetic project representation
  • High level of problem-solving capability by identifying and troubleshooting unexpected results or findings
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a matrix across departmental lines
