Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (WUSM) seeks an impactful scientist and leader to serve as Director of the Washington University Center for Cellular Imaging (WUCCI). The incoming Director will lead an established and well-resourced imaging center encompassing light, electron, and X-ray imaging for one of the most preeminent schools of medicine in the country.

The Director will be entrusted with the center’s mission – to empower the WUSM scientific community with cutting-edge microscopy approaches and expertise to drive discoveries in biological mechanisms from molecular structure to whole animal physiology. The Director will develop and manage a team of scientists and technologists that will provide expertise spanning sample preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis. Currently, a professional staff of ten supports the center. Although the center is housed in the School of Medicine, it supports investigators throughout the entire University. It is hosted by the Departments of Neuroscience and Cell Biology and Physiology

The Director will be responsible for on-going recruitment and mentoring of an increasingly distinguished and diverse staff. With support from the advisory board and administrative team, the Director will manage extramural and capital investment funds, along with center revenue, for instrumentation purchases and maintenance, personnel recruitment, and future growth. The Director will create and support a vision for this interactive, technology-forward, innovative, and supportive center. In doing so, the Director will engage collaboratively with other Center Directors (Genomics, Mass Spectrometry, and Histology among others) and investigators to maintain WUSM’s position as a leader in molecular and cellular microscopy.

The WUCCI occupies 7,000 square feet and includes cutting edge instrumentation in one location including Light Microscopy, 3D X-Ray Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Cryo -Transmission Electron Microscopy. For additional information visit: https://wucci.wustl.edu/

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent experience in one or more areas of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science and will be qualified for appointment as faculty member in a Department of the School of Medicine. The Director will have demonstrated expertise in microscopy, strong interpersonal skills that empower a commitment to team science, and an understanding of the importance of research cores to facilitate modern science. The successful applicant will have experience in team management and mentorship, instrument operations and maintenance, data management and analysis, and method development.

Moreover, the Director should be proficient in a variety of areas of microscopy data analysis, and managing large datasets. The successful candidate will benefit from demonstrated success in project design, consultation for collaborators, teaching practical interpretation of microscopy datasets, effectively communicating project progress, writing technical summaries, preparing presentations, participating in publications, and writing instrumentation grants.
