GSK is a world leading research-based pharmaceutical company that combines both individual talent and technical resources to deliver strong growth in a rapidly changing healthcare market. Our mission is to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.

The Novel Human Genetics Research Unit (NHG RU) at GSK comprises a multidisciplinary biology team that utilizes deep scientific knowledge and technical capabilities to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets with human genetic association to diseases. The Research Unit then undertake drug discovery from early-stage discovery through to Phase 1 clinical trials. The NHG RU conducts drug discovery across a range of therapeutic areas including neuroscience, cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases.

We are seeking an exceptional, highly-motivated, laboratory-based biologist with in vivo experience to join our team. This role is an exciting opportunity to develop as a drug-discovery scientist. You will conduct preclinical experiments that drive the discovery of medicines to treat diseases and will support efforts for target validation, lead discovery, and may also support clinical programs. There will be opportunities to work on targets and pathways relevant to a variety of human diseases.

Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct experiments, primarily in rodents, to support drug discovery programs across multiple therapeutic areas (e.g. pain, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular, renal, NASH)
  • Experience in rodent handling, dosing, blood and tissue collection, and measurements of biological function
  • Experience in designing experiments, generating, recording, analyzing, and presenting data. Skills in interpreting results and drawing conclusions through independent working and with supervision
  • Able to resolve technical challenges and deliver results efficiently
  • Effective communication (both verbal and written) of scientific ideas and results to internal groups.
  • Work under supervision with opportunity to develop greater independence
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a matrix environment

Accountability
  • Accountable for conducting in vivo experiments and recording protocols, methods, results, and conclusions in electronic laboratory notebooks
  • Accountable for delivery/reporting of experimental results to project teams.
  • Ensure scientific accuracy, integrity, and robustness of the data collected as well as the conclusions derived
  • Accountable for own safety, safety of the team, and welfare of the animals
  • With support from management, accountable for your own continued development as a drug discovery scientist
  • Work and behave in compliance with GSK values and Code of Conduct at all times

Complexity
  • Recommend appropriate in vivo assays, animal models, and study designs to drug discovery teams
  • Demonstrate ownership of data
  • Prioritize tasks and support others to contribute to delivery of medicines

Basic Requirements
  • PhD with 0 years of experience, or BS/MS degree in Biology or related area with
  • 1-3 years of research experience either in pharmaceutical industry or an academic environment
  • Experience with in vivo biology techniques related to neuroscience, liver disease, cardiovascular and/or renal function
  • Experience in rodent handling, dosing, drug formulation, tissue harvest, and blood sampling
  • Read and apply scientific literature to in vivo models
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and maintaining laboratory notebooks

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a variety of in vivo studies/techniques to probe disease relevant mechanisms for nociception, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular function, and/or metabolism
  • Able to translate hypotheses to in vivo study design through independent working
  • Good graphing and statistical analysis skills including use of GraphPad Prism.
  • Scientific communication through oral presentations, posters, and/or manuscripts

Why GSK?

We're uniting science, technology and talent to make a difference in more people's lives, and revolutionising the way we do R&D.

We're combining the power of genetic and genomic insights into what causes disease, with the speed and scale of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) to make better predictions about who a treatment might work for, and why. We believe this powerful combination of data and technology holds the key to fundamentally transforming medical discovery for the better, improving R&D success rates and shaping how even the most challenging diseases, like neurological conditions and cancer, can be both prevented and treated.

No single scientist, nor any one technology can keep us all ahead of disease. That's why we build important collaborations with commercial and academic partners to advance our understanding of disease and what it takes to get ahead. In the past three years, we've doubled the number of partnerships we've signed, because of our belief in their significant impact on our process.

Our pipeline currently comprises of more than 60vaccines and medicines across four core therapeutic areas including infectious diseases, HIV, oncology and immunology as well at pursuing other science-led opportunities outside our core areas. Many have the potential to be first or best-in-class opportunities for patients and since 2017, we've delivered 13 major approvals and more than doubled the number of potential new vaccines and medicines in Phase 3 and registration to 23.

In 2021 we delivered four major product approvals: Cabenuva for HIV, Jemperli for endometrial cancer, Xevudy for COVID-19 and Apretude , our new long-acting medicine for HIV prevention.

We give our scientists the freedom to own the process. Our scientists often use genetic data to help us understand the root cause of disease. We steer the research where the data shows we can do the most good . If a project doesn't pan out, we take what we've learned and apply it elsewhere.
