ROLE SUMMARY

As part of the Comparative Medicine team, you will advance the WRDM portfolio through overseeing surgical responsibilities within Comparative Medicine and leading the surgical team to develop novel, innovative and refined surgical models and provide high quality preclinical surgical models to support Pfizer Research Units. You will act as a technology expert managing surgical animal models (internal and outsourced) and anesthesia/analgesia required for research, preclinical and translational clinical support. It is your hard work along with innovative ideas and focus that will help in making Pfizer ready to achieve new milestones and help patients across the globe.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • As an experienced veterinary surgeon in the laboratory animal science & medicine field, leads on the provision of surgical, scientific & technical advisement for in vivo discovery and/or preclinical safety programs by working collaboratively with study teams and providing specialist level surgical skills
  • Collaborates with Pfizer Research Units and partner lines to define study surgical needs, develop, and execute animal models of disease & manage necessary resources
  • Leads a team to provide surgical, anesthesia and analgesia expertise in rodent and large animal species for clinical care, surgical model development and research studies
  • Works across partner lines and/or research units and across sites to test and advance innovative processes, hypotheses and methodologies. Actively encourages curiosity by exploring emerging surgical and anesthetic technologies, challenges the status quo to foster innovation and promotes the 3Rs.
  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert for vendor relationships and for outsourced studies involving surgical models
  • In collaboration with Global Training, develops future talent by engaging in technical and scientific competency of staff to support engagement and internal and external recognition.
  • Provides high quality veterinary care to diverse species of research animals in support of Pfizer's portfolio with ability to assist in clinical coverage on an as-needed basis.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • DVM required; licensed to practice in the US
  • Minimum of 4 years related experience including surgical and laboratory animal medicine and a professional reputation for preclinical surgical expertise
  • Previous supervisory/management experience with demonstrated leadership, collaboration, and success in strategic decisions with interdisciplinary teams and investigative partners
  • Must possess clear understanding of regulations guidance (e.g. USDA, GLP) and AAALAC accreditation standards related to the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons

• Nonhuman primate experience

Board certification by American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

- Ability to stand for extended duration for large animal surgery

-Working with nonhuman primate are included in the job responsibilities. A pre-hire requirement is either providing proof of measles immunity or receiving the measles vaccination before hire.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

~ 10% domestic travel anticipated to support other WRDM sites or observe activities at contract research organizations

Essential Personnel are defined as the staff who are required to report to their designated work location, to ensure the operation of essential functions or departments during an emergency, as determined by Pfizer, or when the business has suspended operations. There are some individuals who may be required to perform essential services remotely and those individuals will be identified in advance and notified by their supervisors, but in most cases Essential Personnel are required to be on-site during an emergency or suspension of operations.
